In the SH, Spring starts on 1 September and always has...Unlike the NH we don't have four distinct seasons, so perhaps that's why.

Here in America, we culturally start the Summer "season" on Memorial Day weekend (usually the last weekend of May) and end it on Labor Day weekend (usually the first weekend of September). During this time, public pools are open, children are out of school (although this varies from school to school), and families take vacations/trips. But we still recognize from a scientific/meteorological perspective that Summer starts with the Summer Solstice on June 21 and ends with the Autumnal Equinox on September 22.

BTW, I incorerctly referred to the Autumnal Equinox as the Vernal Equinox. The Vernal one is in March. I had a momentary brain fart.;)
