hydroponics Trimming Hydroponic Roots

Hey everybody, 
 
I built a circulating hydroponic tower and my root balls are getting huge, to the point of blocking off the water flow. I need some advice on how to deal with this situation.  Is it ok to trim the roots a little bit to get better flow or will it hurt the plants? The roots are super healthy and the grow season is only half way over so this is a big problem!  Thanks!
 
 
 
Thanks for the reply, how has the 8" been working out? I am thinking that over the winter I will build a new system for next season. I was going to go with 6", but 8" was also an option.  Have you had any plugged channels before? Ever tried trimming the roots?
