TB's UDS ROCKS!!

Hey ya'll. I picked up the finished UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker) from my very good friend Dave Jensen over at Silver State Machine this afternoon.

http://www.silverstatemachine.com/

I supplied the design and materials and Dave, Bob, and Garret did the work. The best part....NO CHARGE! I gave them a 55 gal. drum that had been emptied of hydraulic oil used in pistons for hydraulic elevators. They cut off the top of the barrel, and rolled the edge to smooth it out. Dave's dad, Bob, burned out the barrel with a propane torch. For venting the fire basket I had them drill 6 each 5/8" holes an inch from the bottom of the barrel which I would use 5/8" heavy steel bolts and washers as plugs. For more air, pull out a plug. For less, push one in. Easy. Bob welded some feet to hold the 2 grates I would be using. Just large enough to hold them but not so big as to make it difficult removing them. I got the grill grates from Home Despot. 2 each 18" Weber's with the folding sides. For the lid, Bob insisted on cutting one out of plate steel on their water jet machine. Cool. They then welded a handle and jetted 2 large vent holes with sliding covers for dampers. I was hoping the lid would be on the heavy side as we get so much wind here in the big dry ditch. This 'thang weighs about 12 pounds. No wimps will be using this smoker anyhow. I should get the thermometer I ordered the other day in the mail today or tomorrow. Drill a 3/8" hole and screw it in. Done. I have a propane burner I bought for starting the charcoal and wood to be used and will burn the barrel one final time with it tomorrow and then it should be good to go for smoking this weekend. Groovy. I can't decide on colors so I'm gonna' break the 'thang in a few times with some que and paint it later.

Here some UDS porn!

More to come ya'll....

Looks good, that handle may get a little hot, get an oak dowel and slit the side and slide it on.

I'm more interested in the meat that will come off it. Get busy! ;)

I gave them a sheet of expanded metal for the fire basket but they thought the gauge was too light. They cut and welded from some heavier shit and added 3 sturdy steel legs. NOW THAT'S A BASKET!!

With real estate aplenty in this bad boy, I can do some serious que! 2 cats from work already want to use it for parties. (GET YOUR OWN)

There it is ya'll. Muchas gracias for the inspiration Nova and Pippy and all those that chimed in. They'll be lots of hot blue and righteousnessess to go 'round this summer and the evidence will be posted.

Salute' amigo's!!

I'll have a large pair of industrial gloves to handle the meat and take care of the handle as well. No worries. Can't decide on the meat this weekend...ribs or brisket?

Texas is in 'yur name... Brisket! If you dare.

I'll be interested to see if smoke escapes from under that lid, or if you need a gasket. Pics of the whole process please!

That's not a UDS it's a PDS (PRETTY) drum smoker. That's better than most of the store bought smokers you find for a few hundred bucks and i'm sure it will last a LONG time. Get some meat on that thing already!

Yeah it's pretty, you should paint it pink! Props to the boys who did the work for you TB, your props come after you proove that your design actually works! :D

Now git to smokin or i'll get NSA on your a$$!

HAH! YOU of all people should know how I roll. I researched different designs for six months before landing on this one. Took all the best ideas, rolled 'em into one and left the lame stuff. No valves, no wham wham's or zuzu's. Simple. Got my thermometer today too! Brisket this weekend my brother!! I'll have all you can eat my friend, just bring me an Aussie brewhaha...

Lookin damn good! Like the bolt vent idea. Shop guys hooked it up, really looks sweet. Can't wait fer food pix!

Have them make you a second charcoal basket for the long(er) burns especially for a big brisket, Roasts or Turkey -- looks great TB
