Space needed for Manzanos?

From what I understand, Rocotos (of which Manzano is the red) can get over 48" tall. The attached article on the rocoto.com website indicates one to two feet spacing in the garden. This will be my first year growing these as well, and if they do get to over 48" tall, I'm thinking more space is likely better.
 
Well that depends on how much you let them grow. I've heard stories of plants that are many, many meters tall. as for how wide they get, it grows different than C. chinense plants and will grow sideways without support.
 
they'll grow just as much wide as they do high in the ground.... put iyou can contain them in pots
i.e. small container = small plant
 
Manzanos take up a hell of a lot of room. They grew wider a bushier than any other pepper I've ever grown. Also last summer was extremely hot which manzanos don't like as was evident by constant flower drop. The result was low yield. I heard similar results from other growers.
 
only 2 plants and now I am thinking of just growing 1. I have been told they are big and meaty peppers with mild heat. Still not sure if I want to grow it. Was thinking they may go good in a sauce.
 
They are big and meaty peppers, yes, but the heat level varies greatly. I am growing 3 this year - 2 in pots, one in the ground. That link I gave you includes some pics on other pages. I think the guy was nuts when saying 1 - 2 feet spacing. No way would I do the 1 foot unless I was trying for clumping.

Pretty much this. The ones I grew last year were almost twice as wide as they were tall. I ended up having to put a bunch of stakes in the ground to tie the branches off.
Very bushy plants. Love the purple flowers, though.
 
I have 15 different varieties growing right now from 3 to 1 year old, all have pods, the ones in 10ltr containers are much smaller than the ones in the ground and after awhile there branches just interwine with each other , I traced one of the brances and it was easy over 6 feet/2meters long, the height of the tallest would be 6 feet, they do give me plenty of pods but I'll be ripping them up in a month or two to make way for other C. Chinenses instead

I wouldn't consider the ones I've tried mild, orange ones from a Mexican market. They little me up pretty nicely. Maybe that's partly because I'm used to chinense heat which is a different type of burn, but they were hot, and burned for a long time.
