Cucumbers Gone Wild

I planted 12 cucumber seeds Sunday, hoping to have some plants of decent size by the middle of May. That's only about five weeks away, so I was worried they would be large enough to transplant. Now I'm worried that they will take over the upstairs before I can move them. In the four days, they have not only sprouted but grown to 3 inches, 2/3 of that since last night!

At this rate, I'll be transplanting three-foot vines!

laughing with you Mike...I will start mine this week sometime...supposed to be back down to 41F/5C Saturday morning here...hope my plantouts survive it...can you take a picture of your "jungle"?

AJ,

I'll try to get one tomorrow afternoon - with the lights I have getting a picture with them on is real hard. (I'm not the photographer in the family!).

I just went up to turn the lights out and it looked like the "seedlings" had grown. I measured one - four inches. This is unfreakingly believable. Plants don't grow four inches tall four days after being sown.

They are quite leggy but they are getting 1600 lux of light 1/2 inch above their tray. I'm afraid to leave the lights on tonight - who knows how tall these plants would be!

Here is how it looks, four days after sowing. I turned the lights off last night - I was afraid they would outgrow their container!

I kept thinking the forth one up on the left was different, like a little man or scarecrow as he had arms, then I realised the arms were the seedling behind it  I haven't even started drinking yet.

Ok, I can see that.

my simpleton viewpoint..aren't cucumbers vines? and don't vines grow long and skinny? so wouldn't you expect them to get that way? all you have to do is when you transplant, plantem deep...

AJ,

One thing about growing stuff indoors and under lights - every little detail sticks out. I honestly can't say if these mimic what happened last year or not, when they were sowed in the garden.

Unless they continue growing two inches per day, I'm not real concerned but even an inch per day means I'm going to have three foot long vines to deal with before I can get them outside (34 days until frost free here!). I can put them in Mt. Dew bottles so that's not a problem. And once outside, I hope to grow them on wires. The task is too get them as large as I can without getting too large.

I swear, I'm learning more about gardening in one year than I did in 20 years helping dad!

i only ever sow the cukes and zuchini a week ahead of time, everyone else i know just plants the seeds straight in the garden. with another month to go the three foot vine estimate sounds about right...
i've never tried to grow them on wires but mum grows hers at the back near a bunch of young trees and they sure climb those...

GB,

The reason for doing it early - I want produce to sell at a Farmer's Market. If I wait until mid-May to sow them, I won't have any to sell until July. I need a greenhouse, not a spare bedroom!

Well, as I predicted, I too am having this problem. With the cucs AND pole beans. Actually, 3 days after hatching my pole bean is over 7 inches (will post picture later, I have to finish my beer right now and then go for a walk with the dogs and mom).

I know the plant them up to the first set of leaves trick where the stem produces the roots to match works with peppers. My question is will the stem produce roots this way with cucs and beans????

DAMN IT DMAN IT DAMN IT!!! I tranplaned one of them and tride to wrap it around a stray and tie it (training the pole bean) and the freaking first set of leaves broke off!!! AGH!

Sigh, probably dooned that one.
