bpiela 2015 Glog PODS!

I am going to try to do a glog with the plants I am over-wintering this year.  Last year, all of my OW plants died.  :doh:  I have changed some things this year. I hope to have better luck.  :pray:
 
For starters, I picked up another set of lights.  I think I will have better lighting all around for all of the plants.  Second, I took each plant in and washed the soil from the roots and placed in brand new Happy Frog potting soil.  I started watering frequently and have now relaxed the watering schedule to an as needed basis.
 
Unfortunately, I have an aphid problem.  Funny how I never see the aphids on the plants while they are in the garden.  But, I have purchased ladybugs and they are fixing the problem as I speak.  Once the aphids are gone, I will post pictures of the plants.
 
I am over-wintering 15 plants this year.  I chose plants that were either producing the best or ones that I really wanted to give another chance to.  Some plants were grown from seed.  Others were purchased.  The list is:

I thought it would be nice to list the vendor's that I purchased these seeds from, but I also purchase seeds from other vendors and forum folks that are awesome.  Just because I didn't save plants grown from seed from the other vendors doesn't mean that I don't love them.
 
I hope to have pics up in a day or so.  All suggestions or recommendations are always welcome and appreciated.
 
It sounds like you have a handle on things.  I've got 14 this time that I'm overwintering, most are wild varieties along with a red Primo and some Brain strains also. 
Our weather has turned very cold and are setting records for this month, I got mine in just intime if I had waited a week more the cold would have killed them.
 
Hope everything works out and all your ows make it. I look forward to keeping an eye on this to see how things go. I'm ow 15 myself, 5 are reapers since they took so damn long to set pods this year hoping to get a jump start for next year. I have everything potted into smaller pots and under lights in the basement next to the boiler where it stays nice and toasty. The whole basement stays warm but figured bonus heat next to the furnace. I'm trying to prevent aphids this year on my ow by trimming almost all of the leaves off. I've seen it done and hope it works, no leaves nothing for aphids to suck on. Last year my ows made it all the way til the 1st week of April with no problems and then the aphids struck. It was horrible and I lost 5 plants.

It has been a couple of weeks since my first post and I wanted to send some updates.  For starters, the ladybugs arrived and wiped out all of the aphids.  Here is a couple of pictures of my setup.  Not good looking at all.  My shelves are in the basement next to the water heater.  I covered the shelves with a netting that is typically used for camping and keeping mosquitos off of you.  I am sure the masters on this forum will get a laugh at how I am doing things.  Note that the netting does not come all the way down to the floor level in parts, thus providing a way for the ladybugs to escape if they wish.

It seems as if when the bugs try to escape, they don't get far. Here is a picture of the basement floor with some ladybug carnage. I really have no way of keeping them alive now that they have eaten all of the aphids.

Last picture I took, I moved the netting up and took a picture of some live ladybugs on one of the plants. This particular plant is a Yellow Brain. I am seeing excellent growth on almost all of the plants. On the Yellow Brain, I am seeing flowers blooming. I see formations of flowers on the White Fatalii, the Gourmet Fatalii and the 7 Pot Primo. The only slow starter thus far is the Goat Horn but the stems are still green and there are a few leaves still on the plant so I am crossing my fingers.

I have also started some seeds. I started with seeds that I took from peppers I grew or peppers that I received from fellow forum folk. I have a Aji Pineapple started to grow. That plant was purchased from Refining Fire Chiles. I also have a Monkey Face and a Yellow Hendrix sprouting. Those seeds came from peppers I got from fellow forum person Ignite. I did get a bunch of seeds from Juanitos and I will be started them soon. Next time, I will put up pictures of the seedlings.
 
Looking good, your overwinters are nice and green. Good to hear that the ladybugs wiped out the aphids, gotta love mother nature. That's a pretty good way to keep the ladybugs put.

Also, in cups with tops and paper towels and water, I started more peppers from seeds I collected.  I don't necessarily trust my seed collecting methods yet so I thought that I could put a bunch of seeds in a cup and use just the ones that germinate.  I have 7 mini cups with seeds of the following peppers:
Indian Pepper (this is from a pepper that I got from a Indian restaurant)
Aji Amarillo
Aji Pineapple
Monkey Face
King Pao
Pasilla Bajio
Goat Horn
 
That is a boat load of seeds for me.  I am using Parks Seed Starters and Jiffy Pellets for the growing medium.  Let's see what happens.
 
Late update. So for the overwintering that I am doing, a few plants have passed away. They are:

The rest seem to be doing fine. The Gourmet Jigsaw Fatalii is actually doing so well, I am growing peppers. Just picked one today. Here is a pic:

My seed start abilities this year have been bad to horrible. I had a lot of seedling die due to neglect. I need to get back into it. I recently received seeds from a forum member Scorched who is very cool. I really appreciate those seeds and I will be starting a few of them within the next day or so
 
I was concerned that the Fatalii grown indoors would lack flavor or heat.  I don't know why, I just thought something would be different.  The size of the pod is smaller than those that grew on the plant while it was outdoors.
 
Anyways, I cut the pepper above in half and I decided to eat a half.  I wish I had a picture because the amount of capsaicin oil was more than I have seen.  There was a puddle of oil in the pepper.  That kinda scared me.  So, I only ate about a quarter of the pepper.  It was hot.  Really freakin hot.  I haven't really eaten anything hotter than a habanero fresh before.  This was a giant step up from that. 
 
I have about 8 other peppers on the plant.  Looking forward to cooking them up in a chili soon.  Good times.
 
Yep, this glog is weak. Sorry for not posting frequently like glogger's are supposed to do. Anyways, a friend told me the weather report in NJ was to not go below 50 for the week so I planted a few of my OW's. Here is a pic:

I planted three OW's at the end of the day today. I would have planted them all, but this weekend was busy. Anyways, what you see here is from right to left, my Gourmet Jigsaw Fatalii (the largest of the three plants), a Pumpkin Hab (Most of it had died but this one stem), and a Devil's Tongue. I have 6 other OW's that have survived. The Yellow Brain, the White Fatalii, the Black Naga, the 7 Pot Primo, the Caribbean Red Hab and the 7 Pot Douglah. I will plant those out this week along with the plants I have grown from seed and the ones that I have purchased. I will post pictures once they are in the ground.
 
Planted out today. Pics coming tomorrow. For the first time, I grew too much and bought too much. I got like 20+ peppers without an outside home.

Still need to lay down mulch. I know that everything is cramped and crowded but it is all I have and I couldn't stop putting more stuff in there. Hopefully, I can keep everything alive and get some decent results. I will post pics weekly from the same angles to show the growth.

Everything looks really good. Very nice garden. Might be small but you've packed it full of some great things. I'm growing all of mine close together. In the garden itself (30' x 30') I'll be going 1' apart but rows will be 2' or 3' wide. This is just to make it easier for myself. The raised beds I'll be going with the square foot gardening plan mostly and packing them in there as well. I've seen a few glogs where others have their plants packed close so yours should be fine. The only problem might be harvesting pods in a tight space.
 
I'd definitely make sure you put down either mulch or weed barrier. Not only to make it easier on yourself by not having to weed but some weeds can harbor bacteria/viruses that can transfer to your plants. Another tip is to make sure you get the mulch/weed barrier right up around the base of the plant. If not remove the lower leaves for maybe 3" so that soil doesn't splash up onto the leaves when raining/watering. This can transfer bacteria/viruses especially in cramped quarters where airflow might not be so great. A bonus of packing em in tight is they will have each other to lean on during bad storms.
 
If you've got any small spots in the garden or around it or even a small plot in the yard somewhere plant some marigolds, basil, dill, carrots that you let go to seed, cilantro. These will attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings to keep bad bugs under control. Hope you have a killer season.
 
Today I visited ChilePlants.com, which happens to be located in Rosemont, NJ. About 1 hr and 30 mins to get there from my house. The reason I stopped by was to buy Tomatillos, which I could not find locally. I would bet there was another place closer but this place popped up in my search and it sounded like a fun place to visit. They were a little light on plants mostly because it is late in the purchasing season and they are selling out of stuff. I did pick up 3 Tomatillo plants, a Everona Large Green, a Jumbo Hybrid and a Mt Pima. Very happy to have them. I couldn't help myself and I visited the pepper grow room. They were sold out of all of the normal stuff but there was still a bunch of goodies to be had. I picked up 6 plants. In alphabetical order, I picked up a Aji Colorado, a Candlelight pepper (ornamental), a Chiltepin Fort Prescott, a Criolla Sella, an Inca Red Drop and a Takanotsume. They are all in ground. I updated my page above with their locations. I am pumped!
 
Weekly pics are here.  I decided to stay with the Cedar Mulch.  I like the idea that it repels some bugs.  If this will help with the pepper maggots I had to deal with last year, then it is a win.  I will try to keep a close eye on the plants and possibly fertilize with a little extra Nitrogen if need be.

Nice that you can pick up semi-exotics like those at a local store!

This is the OW's mostly.  It is hard to see but at the top right, my White Fatalii is experencing serious leaf droop.  Since this picture was taken, I spread some Epsom salts around the plant and then had a torrential downpour.  The plant has magically come back to life.  I don't think the water was the issue.  Perhaps a combo with the Epsom salts.  Either way, I am happy.  My Gourmet Jigsaw Fatalii at the upper left has set a few peppers already.  That plant looks very healthy.  I will get many peppers this year from that plant.
