Datil's

I planted some Datil  seed's form Judy that I got as a freebie one that I been wanting a long time.
Judy really is a pepper sage it like she reads minds !
Anyway I got a few that came up and there doing well nothing else came up and I thought ok that's it
Well after those started to get true leaves I had stragglers pop up that's been some time ago and they are way behind but maybe one.
I am wondering if they may be some other peppers that got mixed up or crossed maybe some mutants.
I have kept the heat pad on fixing to unplug that till my second rounds a little later in march.
So any information form the experience people would be much appreciated

Those little bastards are finnicky if they choose to be.
They were definitely late to the party they most be taking pointers form my cat on being finicky lol
 
It's not uncommon for late poppers on some varieties though. The stock could be from a different pods that where marginally greener than the first more ripe poppers etc. that can cause some differences in time, or for whatever reason moisture hasn't penetrated the casing as fast etc etc etc.. I've had a lot of seeds recently that have done what you said . Some starting true leaves before the other seeds have broken soil ...
Then on other varieties I've had almost universal popping times , hots and superiors are always finicky though, cool peppers are like weeds and always sprout lol

I bought Datil pepper seeds from Judy (pepperlover) earlier this year (2015) and they were also very hard to germinate.  all the other varieties I bought from Judy and including the freebies germinated very quickly.  Those Datil seeds are some very stubborn SOB's! 
 
I am having stragglers come up now from the Datil also, as long as I have a couple plants I'll be happy.

Same here glad I got some and the one that did not germinate at all Tobago seasoning is being replaced by sweet Judy with peach congo pl
I have five peach jolokia's s s  so I am very happy .
 
I got Datils from a few vendors here in the UK - without much success with the germination rates. Then stumbled across this guy:

And thought - what the hey I'll give it a go. I did, and they germinated within 10 days, even here across the pond. Not sure how well they will mature given the difference in climate and sunlight, but may be worth your time if you have the right climate.
 
I only have 2 datils growing this year from seed. I hope they get big enough to produce this year. They are only about 3 inches right now.
 
I have two planted gave one to a buddy if I remember right.
One I think is growing right but the other is growing werid but seems fine otherwise
The plant is not straight up but bent pointing right don't know why its growing like that as both get the same amount of light .
The other is getting bushy all this rain and tempature changes might of had some kind of effect on the strange one.

if mine end up tasting like oranges then they will become one of my favorite peppers
 
That's just what it reminds me of. But then again mine came from the nursery next to the biggest orange grove around.

I like the taste of them and agree w rex about them being 'citrus-y'.  The ones I grew last year were really hot though!  The first ripe datil pod on the plant was pulled and eaten right then, still warm to the touch from the afternoon sun.  Effing thing lit me up like a christmas tree.  I was all slobbery and hiccup-y and sweating on the eyelids n hsit.  I didn't touch em again for a week.  Sliced into dishes/sauces/dips = win.  But I won't down a fresh one again.  #rekt

I enjoy the Taste of Datil, and would also agree that they seem "citrusy" or "tropical tasting" and they can get decently hot.  they are good fresh in various food dishes, also great dipped in chocolate and served alongside chocolate dipped strawberry's, or made into Jelly, or....  
One of my favorite uses for Datil's:
 
 
Mango Datil Margaritas
 
 


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen mango chunks
  • 4 oz. of your favorite Margarita Mix
  • 1 destemmed/deseeded Datil
  • 2 oz Centenario or Your preferred Tequila




Directions:

put frozen Mango chunks, Tequila, & Margarita mix into the blender along with one Datil.  Blend until it’s nice and frothy.  Give it a taste and see if it’s spicy enough… if you want it more Hot, blend in a second piece of Datil.
Pour into your favorite glass with a salted rim (ghost pepper salt would go great here) and finish it with a slice of lime.  
Makes 1 margarita.

I'm really hoping my 2 little Datil's grow up and produce some peppers this year. If not I will surely over winter them. I will most likely make hot sauce out of them and maybe some powder.
