Low Quality Worm Castings?

Today, I picked up 12lbs of worm castings from the hydro shop, for $.50lb. I thought that was a screaming deal, until I got them home an examined them. It looks like nothing more than semi-screened dirt, or manure. I already called the hydro store back, and will get a refund if I want. The castings I've always bought before, looked like dark coffee, tiny bead like grain. More expensive, too. What quality are these $.50lb castings?

Pure castings definitely look like coffee as you said. Perhaps it's from a local hobbyist or perhaps the hydro shop itself has a worm farm out back, and the separation leaves a lot to be desired. It's probably worm castings mixed with compost and dirt. For $6, might still be worth a try.

I'm sorry your manure looks like manure. :(

When I had my own worms the texture varied by depth, food, casing etc. Seems like it all worked well though.

Sounds homegrown. Thought 1 time I'd save money by raising my own
worms 2 get castings. Poor quality led me to buying casting again
