What is in the ground?

We are two weeks away from last likely frost but a month from the absolute you wont have frost unless something really weird happens date.  So far, in the ground are sweet, white, yellow, and red onion with a focus on sweet.  Red potato and that is it.  Now that we are getting close, the weather wont dry out enough for me to plant seed the way I like.

Garlic, shallots and onions. Lettuce will probably go in tomorrow. I'm starting to put together flower containers, but those don't really count.  ;) I'll be seeding mustard, chard, turnips and carrots pretty soon.

Lettuces.  That's it really.

75% of my grow is peppers...I'm planting out on May 1 this year, these temps are telling me the frost danger is already over but I don't wanna put peppers in the ground with night temps hovering in the high 40's, I lost all my overwinters last year because of an overnight forecast of 41 and when I woke up in the morning it was 29.

Rairdog, you are one state north of me and sound like you are doing what I started about 8 years ago: grapes and berry.  Had horrible luck with hardy kiwi and fig.  Going to try again if I get a greenhouse built this year.  Grapes have taken off like crazy, fresh jelly each year.  Raspberry OK.  Blackberry unreal, I dig n sell them every year.  Too damn many grow up where I dont want them.

Curious, are you going for a homestead / sustenance thing?  If so, would love to swap ideas.

I had pretty good luck with Chicago hardy fig last year.  There is a lady down the street had a huge patch so I am giving it a go.  The grape, kiwi, goji, raspberry, gooseberry are new this year.  Hopefully they like the soil.   I have avoided blackberry until I can find a spot to let them takeover.

I have been supplementing our meals with venison and veggies for a few years.  We don't buy beef or many vegetables anymore.  I also grow most all the herbs and spices.  We have cut our grocery bill to about 150/mo and a few staples in between for the 3 of us.

I use my GH for all my starts and aquaponics.  It is shut down Dec-Feb.  If I wasn't in a flood plain I would dig down 4 feet with a dirt burm on the north side.  Then I could grow year round and maybe have some bananas, mango's and other tropical fruit.

I got to regular orange carrots today.  Also some of the red onions, but they are not done yet.  In AM, picking up hay for critters and then moving on to 'Cosmic Purple Carrots'.  Why?  Oh hell, I grow yellow watermelon, purple bells, and black tomato.  Taste the real rainbow.

Rairdog - My sunken green house plans are on hold.  Started digging but have challenges that stop me from moving forward.  Biggest challenge I have with lowering grocery bills is the kids and snack foods.  Son is in that pizza and mac n cheese phase.
For the most part, the only thing I grow that he will eat is grape jam.  Daughter is starting to expand.  She insists I grow potato and onions in the same row because that is how she eats them, fried together.  Also, she will eat just about any vegie if I drench it in ranch.  But it slashes grocery bills for my wife and I.

Best part, I get to taunt friends with a rainbow of bell peppers cut up into a veggie wrap that would cost them ten bucks if they bought the peppers from the grocery store.

Sirex - What does chocolate mint taste like?  Is it good for tea?  I need to expand on things I can make beverages with.

I'm probably going to bite the bullet and get my three sisters in the ground today, corn, squash, beans.  Night temps are stabilizing at over 50 so I think it's ok for that, the day temps are around 80 for the next week.
