Pod variations on the same plant?

Understanding pod variation on an entire plant is easy:Mama's dna did that.

I -think- when all the pods on a single branch are different that it might indicate mutation / something developed differently on that branch.

But what on earth is going on when you have different looking pods on a single plant, but they are not limited to a single branch?

I had that happen to one of my Bhutlah plants. I can't post pictures directly, but if you look at my seriously hot peppers Facebook page, you will see that this plant first produced pods that looked like a chocolate bhut. Then, they started to elongate and get fatter, then they ended up looking like a chocolate reaper with tails. Interesting, but I have no explanation. Tom
 
i am looking at a 7 pot primo that has a pod that is absolutely evil. several others on the plant, one wonders if it is even meant to be on the same plant!
