Favorite new plant you grew this year

Ive got 2.

For years my dad asked for West Indian bhur gherkins. Well, he got his wish this year. Rareseeds had some so we grew them. The plant is a beast compared to a cucumber plant. It seems unaffected by the common afflictions cuke plants get.....And the taste!!!....Man are these things delicious pickled or with a tiny bit of salt/vinegar on them. Very hard to describe the taste...Reminds me of a cross between a very mild cuke with just a hint of mellon. Flesh is very firm.

Another first are Asian long beans on a trellis. They started out slow but then reached the top of my 8ft trellis in no time. I grew Chinese red noodle bean and Taiwanese black seeded. Both from rareseeds. The red noodle is a crazy producer but mine didn't end up looking like the pictures. Mine look more like Chinese mosaic beans.

The black seed long bean though is just now starting to produce beans. I can only find 2 sofar. Im baffled because the red noodle has been producing for well over a month and the black seeded plants are massive in comparison. Both are growing side by side too.

Next year i want to try the Liana Asian long bean variety. They are supposed to be early producers.

Planted an herb garden for the first time this year and it really brought fresh flavor to almost all my meals. Definitely one of my favorites.

Nope, totally different plants. I have those too. My Mexican sours dont get much bigger than a thumbnail and look just like tiny melons.

Baker Creek is actually responsible for my hot pepper addiction.

I found them online in '12 and ordered general garden seeds for that season. In the fall I received their glorious catalog and while diligently wearing out the pages for my '13 garden needs my eye was drawn to the Lemon Drop Peppers. Remember, this was before the hot pepper Renaissance and before every grocery store in the US carried 23 or more different hot sauces.

Their "citrus-y" description of the Lemon Drop Peppers sucked me in. I had never been into hot foods but I had to have these peppers. So, I bought the LDs and a couple other mild hot peppers from another source and I was off, never to look back again!

Aji Lemon Drops and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (rareseeds.com) have a special place in my heart (and on my lips...and my tongue...and my throat...and my anus).

I tried the marketmore 76 and boston pickling cucumbers from rare seeds (baker creek) this year and we have been picking loads of delicious cucumbers! I consider them winners, although I am relatively inexperienced with growing cucumbers.

My favorite new sweet and mild peppers from my trial runs this season have to be the bangalore whippets tail from the hippy seed company for its incredible shapes and bell of göllü from pepper lover for its flavor.

I have yet to decide on a fav new chinense or heirloom tomato variety. However, of the hybrid tomatoes that I trialed momotaro or 'tough boy' has been my favorite.

Also I should mention that the Multipik F1 yellow straight-neck squash I grew from Johnny's seeds has produced enough squash to make me sick of it!

That Westindian Gherkin is awesome, never seen anything like that. You're right very different and at the same time a bit similar in the fruit

I need to make some ressource, need to try that one too

I found one today that was almost as big as a lemon. I try to pick them closer to golf ball size to minimize the seed "cavity". Pickled a jar and made a small amount of cold pack chips too. I actually like these better than a cucumber.

Since this was in "other" i didnt list my peppers. While i am absolutely thrilled with the lemon drops and sofar the pepper it self is my favorite BUT...., i was super impressed with how easy the serrano grew and how nice the cowhorn turned red. Both are really kicking out the peppers too.

These things are huge and quite a bit more than mild.

Really loving how many peppers all my serannos are spitting out and the plants are relatively small.

Orange habs deserve a honorary mention too. Love the production and quality of this plant. Never grew them before.

This Bhur Gherkin took over my entire patio deck and YEP its in a pot. INSANELY easy to grow and taste awesome too. Everyday during the late afternoon sun the leaves curl up which makes spotting/picking them easier.

Absolute must have if you like pickles....Cold brine....super sour too.

Hot brine but put in the fridge as soon as possible

My crazy Chinese red noodle bean that i would swear is a Chinese mosaic instead. Don't believe all that you read, these tasted just fine simmered with some bacon but they do really shine stirfried till the skin wrinkles. If you decide to grow these be prepared to harvest everyday once they start to produce.

Goldman's Italian tomato from Baker Creek. Wave 1 of the fruits came through a few weeks ago, many of which were over a pound. Wave 2 is ever growing as we speak. Nice, meaty, thick-walled tomatoes that are great for everything, including processing. Definitely keeping it.

I love my two pumpkins.
Now, they're not very large, I'm growing two plants in a 50litre soil bag, so it's cramped. But I've got one fruit on each plant.

And honorary mention goes to Angelle cherry tomatoes, man, they taste like candy. SOOOO nice when you grow them yourself.
