Take all my money, just don't hurt my peppers. Smallbutfierce's attempt to make hot peppers grow in

Hello everyone!!  There is like 30" of snow falling outside and we are only half way though this fabulous blizzard, so I figured I'd get my seeds started.  A little background:  I'm a chef at a internationally inspired bistro in Bangor, ME.  Meaning I do French, Italian, Asian, South American, traditional and modernist.  Pretty much do what I feel like.  This grow is a combo of some research into breeding peppers through crosses and hybridization.  I will look at various characteristics that make them better for cooking, as well as growing up here.  No idea what traits I will breed for yet, this is just to get some practice and some seed stock.  I will focus on which plants grow the best this season.  My experience with growing is limited to one outdoor season which failed miserably(previous job required 65+hrs and left no time for anything), and this winter's indoor grow.  The indoor grow was marginally successful.  I have healthy plants, but due to some nutrient issues and pot sizes, all the flowers dropped.  I cleaned out my grow area and made those plants into house plants.  They are doing great, still growing, some are flowering again.  I have a passive solar heated house with a ton of south facing windows.  Thats pretty much it for background.  On to the plan.

This years grow list is based off of some reading, some tasting, and some reviews.  Plus some curious additions.

Here is the list:

Carolina Reaper
Fatalii red
Fatalii yellow
7 pot lava yellow
Aji Fantasy
Murupi Amarela
SBJ7
7 pot primo yellow
Apocolypse Scorpion
Bulgarian carrot
Red Savina
Carribean red Hab(maybe?  questionable source)
Fatalii Jigsaw(unsure of isolation, seed sourced from purchased pod)
Bhut Jolokia Chocolate
Bhut Jolokia Red
Butch T Scorpion

These are all started today.  Doing a modified wet paper towel method of germination(wet paper towels in lg tupperware heated by my lights), then planting in 3" pots.  And growing under lights till May 20th(hopefully).  Will be using promix for seedlings, and probably some built soil for my pots(5 gal bags).  Nutrients are fish emulsion at the beginning, then Tomato-tone for fruiting.  At least that is the plan right now.  We will see how things go.  Thanks for reading, and thanks for all the info.  Hope everyone has a successful 2017!!  I'm going to try and dig a path for my dogs to be able to go out.

Nice hot list, good luck. I'm in zone 3 and my indoor aji Amarillo experiment is actually getting away from me, compared to expectations. LOTS of help here, these guys rock!

And I see that you, uh, like to cook? Wait'll you check the Throwdowns and the recipe threads!

@ stettoman, yes, I have checked out the throwdowns.  Actually made a il diavolo deep dish for this past one, but I was entertaining company and didn't have the time to put together a good pic/recipe walkthrough.  And I thought one dish wasn't really good enough to enter.  Plus, I was rooting for the Patriots, that was stressful enough.  I do, however, plan do some recipe contributions.  I am only sitting on some dried reaper and some bhut jokia powder, some infused oils, and some pickled fatalii jigsaws right now.  Once I restock with freshies, I will share my experiments.  I am big into smoking/bbq, do local cooking contests, and cook every day of the week.

@ mpicante the apocalypse scorpion is this:

I thought it looked gnarly, but I believe I read it doesn't live up to its appearance.  We will find out.

A little update:  So far, most of everything has popped.  Having issues with red fatalii and red bhut not germinating.  Which surprises me, since some more typically finicky types are were ready in a week.  But, all else considering, moving along quite well.  I can't wait till they have leaves and I can treat them like plants.  Seedlings suck.  My work schedule makes it hard to keep them from drying out, but I think we are out of the tough part.  I only need 2 of each and I am sitting on 4 or more of everything.  I plan to set up my second light and shelf this weekend.  I will be growing 20 plants for a friends community garden as well as starting a bunch of crosses and non-isolated fun seeds from whitehotpeppers.  After putting in all this effort, I decided I am going to get a temporary green house to help increase my chances of a successful year.  There are affordable options on amazon that I am sure will survive a summer here.  My house plant peppers are cranking right along.  Most I have had to trim back, some are flowering again.  Here is a pic of my bonchi Butch-T.
