Jaltomata

Another cool Solanaceae like Capsicum and Solanum. Not as widespread or useful, but should be fun plants.

I figured I would do a running glog of these instead of a big photo dump at the end of the season. I have 5 species sown and will document them here if things play out properly. First up is J.sinuosa.

Very interesting John. I see that many Jaltomata fruits (including J.sinuosa) are edible, i'm curious about their flavor :)

Best of luck

Looking great. If you're looking at other Solanaceae, have your considered growing Naranjilla? I had a much easier time growing those than I did Jaltomatas. It grew like a weed in my aquaponics system- just have to be careful of the thorns when you are around it!

Starting research work at CCSU on J. procumbens tomorrow. These things have great flowers so I'll have to grow my own if I get the opportunity.

Lookin HAIRY :)

I hope you see this Pr0digal_son I made an account just to contact you, it won't let me PM you though.

I was wondering if you had any SBS Purple pepper plant seeds, I would be happy to pay you for them. I saw your pepper plant and it is so beautiful I would love to have a bunch of these growing in my garden.

I have grown many Solanums including Naranjilla,. There are many useful ones and funner to grow than Capsicum IMO.

I don't have any seeds for these,sorry.

Sorry for the lack of updates.

This is definitely not a plant to grow unless you have access to a greenhouse!! I can't imagine how large it could get. The big issue with this plant is it has hollow stems, even a 5 mp/h puff of a breeze snaps limbs. Two microbursts,a tornado, and 1.5" of hail have taken a toll on it. It has gone from knee high to 7' on three different occasions. The berries varied in taste from bitter to a  pleasant blackberry flavor. It is a really nice plant, just not suited for the weather we get here.

Oh, it didn't even occur to me that these have edible fruit, as I haven't looked J to them myself.

Anyway, it sucks that you don't live in the best location for them. I may try growing one or two of the plants myself eventually.

Some of them have edible fruit but you don't want to get the wrong one.
