Meatfreak's 2017 Glog

So I've started the new season to, early January I did a poor attempt at some Wild varieties but I lost my patience and after a month I tossed them out hehe. Only the Tovarii germinated and is growing, very slowly. Although I didn't wanna have to much plants, the list went over 100 but I brought it back to 88   Besides all my projects I also wanted to grow some regular varieties and old seedstock like the Hab Yucatan and CGN varieties. Exactly those are the ones that haven)t germinated yet after 12 days, so there's still time. All others have close to 100% germ rate. I was aiming at 5 plants of each F-2 phenotype project. The "new" F-2 grow out, 10 seeds. Still not much to see all possible variations but I got a small amount of people helping me out again  :shh:  I also got some bigger plants that I sowed last year end of season for an early start. Was hoping to speed up growing out multiple generations in a year that way. Since the days are still rather short I ordered some LED grow lights as an extra during the evening. Like last year I aim to plant out 3rd week of May again. Of course it all depends on the weather, so far we've had much colder weather then previous years.

Not much interesting to see yet besides seedlings :) you can see where I sowed the CGN's

Pimenta Lisa F-5 all purple seedlings as they should be, so no need to remove green ones.

MFPJ31 F-2 all purple left and green on the right. This is the first time growing the F-2 so nice to see variation showing already.

Something else I love to do and have been trying to perfect for a year now is baking bread. In this case, Sourdough bread with pickled Jalapeno and cheese.
I really prefer working and eating sourdough over the dry yeast. Much more flavor and the fermenting of the dough makes it easier for our bodies to break it down. Luckily the rest of the family likes it to

You have a little paradise in there, my friend!
All the plants, peppers and others, show the
results that stem from careful attention.  The
sweet potato bed is amazing!

Well done!

Thanks, Paul :)

It's only a few degrees warmer in the winter then it is outside, glass greenhouse is a bit warmer. I don't use a heater but put in buckets of water that heat up during the day and give warmth at night. This last winter was pretty cold compared to the year's before but that didn't kill any of the veggies I was growing inside. If you got more questions feel free to send an PM and I will try to help out :)

The heatwave has stopped and its back to more normal temperatures.

You got it down my friend! I've been looking at maps and it's pretty cold there compared to what I see ;)

Great job!

Been a awful long time since I updated. Season was... good but overall just very busy. Anyway here are some harvest pictures of the stuff I've gotten from my crosses.

12kg harvest

This season I grew sweet potatoes for the first time, very happy with the excellent yield and it was a rather low maintenance crop to grow. Average of 2.5kg a plant was more then expected. Total harvest of 22,4kg. They are now curing and if that works out great I will have much more plants next year.

Very cool Stefan, glad you had a good growing season! I hear ya 'bout being very busy. We have been here too.
Are those sweet potatoes the red-skinned, white-fleshed Asian variety? If so, I think I may give them a try next year. If you can grow them where you live, I should be able to grow them here. Cheers!

Thanks, Rick. It was an very different growing season, wouldn't say good but everything was just much later ripe. Especially the peppers, which did came through in the end. Most important thing for me is to see as many possible variations on my crosses or finding the correct phenotype from previous generations again. The Pimenta Lisa seems to really be heading towards stability, finally!

Those are red-skinned potatoes indeed, but they are Orange inside, not white. It's an commercial variety that comes in Orange and White. Normally I like to grow my own plants but as I wasted my time on it last year I decided to buy them this time. Wanted to know how the grow would go and how good the yield would be. I did grow these in my polytunnel, not sure if they would've turned out so great if I grew them outside. Although they said it's also suited for outside grow in our climate. The variety is called "Erato Orange". Now that it was an success I plan on making my own slips for next year from the harvest I gotten. Think I will grow triple the amount as they don't require that much space and this year I also had peppers between them that worked just great. The vines do attempt to climb up the plants but you can guide them ;) Will grow some sweet potatoes plants outside as well then to see how big the difference will be. I would definitely give it a try next year, best to look up varieties that are more suited for our climate. Did you ever try to grow (dry) beans? I've really gotten into those as well since last season, love the diversity of them and you can get a good yield that you can eat during the winter period.

Great varieties Stefan .. what are the yellow Bonnet shaped pods sixth picture down if I may ask
Thanks John, those are actually not yellow but Peach. It's hard to almost impossible to get that color right on camera. It's an cross of mine, these are a new phenotype that showed up during the F-3 grow out so still very unstable. The white/cream ones above the Purple Jalabanero cross came from the same seeds. Funny how genetics works, turns out the color white and peach are very close in the genetics.
