Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

"That's right.  It was your rocotos you topped recently.
Hard to keep track with everything you have going on ATM!
I guess that's even more impressive that they're doing that
without your intervention."

There's a pic of those here, CD  :D

OMG did you see that, GPR?

After 12 days, my saved seeds are doing pretty good, 3 out of 4 sprouted.

But I'm also having difficulty getting the white version to sprout from the seeds PaulG sent.

The front two cells of this tray are PDN x BMJ (I've labeled them as F6, but I'm thinking they are actually F7).

The cell on the left has four seeds from the ones sent out by PaulG.  The one on the right is four seeds I saved from last years white pods.

There's not much purple to them yet.  I use natural light from a South facing window, and it's been very cloudy the last few days.  So these guys haven't seen much light yet.

Oh well, on the bright side, nothing makes a pepper more popular than being difficult to get.  :)

I'm thinking some of them got too warm during the drying process.
It's the only thing I can think of   :banghead:

Yes the seedlings are the seventh generation of Tristen's cross

I feel your pain  :mope:

I'm glad your seed proved to be more viable, Mitch.
I hope they turn out to be awesome plants. Were the
pods isolated at all?

You are right about the light. If it's cloudy a lot in the
early Spring, they sometimes lose some of the purple,
as well.

Yeah, if difficulty is desirability, that batch of seed is
top shelf!

Awesome to see all your plants grow so fast! I'm a bit late to the party because I'm just starting at the end of this month. Last year my plants grew too tall for my growing cabinet way before it was warm enough for them to be outside. 10 days and the seeds go in the ground!

I am using T5HO. The plants are under a 4x4.

Looks like good percentage of germination on
the bulbous. Hope you get to grow a couple of
those out.

Thanks for the great update, Andy

Hey, Marc, I'm not seeing your pictures

Light intensity definitely makes a difference.
On mygrow table, the lower leaves aren't as
purple as the tops.  In the summer sun, the
plants look almost black, they are so dark

Hmmm... I'm using dropbox to post my pictures... doesn't seem to work for everybody... I need to switch to another image hosting service...

I use T8 grolux lamps. Plants grow fine under this light but the spectrum may influence the purple coloring...

It's never too late, Bernd!
Best of luck to you this season!

More Pics.
Plants look great, Aravind, your AeroGarden is nailin' it.
Those plants must have healthy root systems.

I'd have to agree with that, Marc.
Mine are veg spectrum lights, 6500K, I think.
don't know how that compares to the grolux lamps.

Lol, its too good.  It's already starting to tangle with my other plants.

Have been reading up a little on pruning and
trimming pepper plants. I read that rather than
picking off all the flowers, they should be removed
at the first (Y) node, and all the odd nodes there-
after leaving flowers at the even-numbered nodes.

Following that, I will start to think about how I want
to prune the branches.

Trimming the primary leaves at the Y node lets light
down into the lower branching nodes:

Photo update, F7W and family, just over two months
since the first hooks. You can easily see that F74 has
lighter foliage than the other F7W plants:

Wow sorry about the fuzzy pic. My arm was totally
stretched out
Pics of each plant to follow soon

I found some 6500K T8 bulbs and bought a box. They work great ;)

This is the (I think) F6 plant I grew last year:
taiu4k.jpg

Some of the harvested pods are in the upper left of the picture in this post in my '18 glog.  If I'm right about this plant being F6, then I guess the seeds from the pods are F7.  Paul can correct me if I have something wrong.

The plant wasn't isolated (you can see other peppers in the picture above), but I saw so few pollinators of any kind last year I think they should mostly grow true.  I have plenty of seeds if anyone needs any.

Sweet, John! Those pods look great, nice and fat.
I hope they had a taste and heat to your liking.

You are right, the seeds from that plant will produce
the seventh generation. Very kind of you offer seeds
to the growers on the thread, my friend.

Thank you.

I don't actually remember much about the flavor, but it certainly wasn't offensive. What I do remember is thick, crisp walls with lots of oil inside. And a very, very "front and forward" burn. My lips tingled for more than an hour after tasting one.

I agree with your assessment, John. To me, the
flavor is pleasant, but hard to describe.  Not
rank or bitter, at all.

It can be a hottie, though. They make great
dried pods. They hold the heat quite well in
the jar.
