A lot of people bought plants hoping this was the real deal. I wonder if anyone will bother to buy seeds at the end of the season now that it's no longer a record breaker.

Looks like my first impression and analysis of that Tom Smith and those news articles was spot-on. 
 
So, it sounds like this pepper is potentially a first-generation hybrid - so to anyone who's picked up seeds, it'll be interesting to see what variations spring up. :)

Either that or just one screwed up Infinity pepper.
 
I wonder what he's talking about for the "approach to guinness was not carried out correctly?" Do they really have no idea what they're doing or what?
 
I think the implication is that Mr. Smith did a whole load of stuff without their permission or any knowledge of the chilli world. There is, however, so much contradictory information on their facebook page that it's impossible to tell the truth.

Hard to say since Guinness does not list the rules, but I'm guessing it has to do with the stability of the strain and having the peppers tested by an outside lab that they are not affiliated with.
 
I say screw Guinness, in my opinion they are just a high priced marketing ploy. Why is it that "their record pepper" is the end all be all??
 
If Neil Price and his cohorts send pods to our member 1tom2go (Southwest Bio-labs) whom I trust, and they test 1.7mil average, 2.4mil high (imagined guestiments?) than they are hotter than the reaper IMO. The fact that Guinness has a monopoly on appointing the hottest pepper is bullshit.
 
I trust Tom more than Guinness. And his fee's are extremely reasonable.

Having your 'own creation' as the Guinness record would obviously be great marketing for any company invested in chillies. I can understand why companies would want to chase that crown - I mean how many people would have known about Puckerbut had they not got the Reaper in Guinness?

The Reaper is almost a household name in South West Oz.. and at local chilli festivals the Puckerbut stand is always one of the most popular, and if you ask me personally is not cos of the taste of the sauces (IMO not that good compared to local products) but the association with the record holder. I can't imagine how much sauce that company is selling world wide!

I personally hope that Neil Smith grows the new record holder as he deserves it not just for his company, but for his dedication to the hobby and cos he's a good bloke.

So I think the Guinness world record is a good thing, and gives our hobby world recognition. I bet countless growers got into the wider hobby as a result of the Carolina Reaper and the press it has received.
 
See, that's just the thing Guinness (as far as peppers go) is for the average joe on the street so they are informed about the trendy new "hottest" pepper. Here, we are a bunch of highly informed die hard pepperheads, we don't need Guinness to tell us what the hottest pepper is, we have plenty of other reliable sources that are actually chile enthusiast. My point is "we" are in the trenchs digging the fox holes, we don't need some international news print to tell us whats going on in the pepper war. The reaper and its perceived heat levels were known about here on THP before Guinness vouched for em.

I do agree, if I want to grow the worlds hottest chillies I'll ask here which ones to grow. I probably wouldn't even consider the Reaper.

But Guinness does get the chilli growing community some attention and brings people in that become proper informed growers.. as a whole it keeps average Joe interested.

I doubt that will happen, I'm sure they provide their costumers with a certain level of privacy. I would think its up to the person who provided the peppers to publish results.
 
The more i think about it, I would think southwest bio-labs results would stand up in a court of law. If someone wanted to claim the "hottest pepper in the world" and had the results, I would think you could use southwest bio-labs as an expert witness in a court and bypass Guinness, making them and their fee's null and void.

Sure, but they would have to side-by-side test the competition, right? Which I believe means same growing conditions (ie field trials).
 
Guinness gets around having to do field trials by saying "send us your best peppers, we'll see if theyre the hottest we've gotten." That only works if everybody is sending in peppers.

I'm no lawyer not sure? I imagine the grower/farmer could claim his soil mix or nutes was part of the trade secret that got him there. IMO the grower/farmer should be credited with the record, and then the pepper type mentioned. The grower has a hell of a lot to do with it as well as pheno of a specific type. I think the 7pot brainstrain which has been around much longer (more stable) could beat the reaper if the right grower tried.
