My pepper journey

Hello everyone, I'd like to just post up my journey as a beginner.

I started a garden this previous year, all outdoors, and had more tomatoes and cucumbers than I could even use. My bell peppers did awful, I think I got two or three tiny mutated looking peppers. Jalepenos did good as well as my little red mexican chilis (pretty sure thats the exact name that was on the seed labels.) Perhaps my proudest was my ghost pepper plant, which produced probably 60 pods.

Unfortunately, I thought I could harvest them early as the first frost was fast approaching, and hopefully they would ripen well like green tomatoes in the windowsill. Eventually they just turned mushy and nasty. Only a few actually turned red and the rest were lost. I chalk this up to being a beginner, and hopefully this post will bring me some insight on what I could be doing better.

Anyways, before I get much further I have gotten a lot of inspiration from YouTube, Khang Starr and Jeb the Gardener on YouTube are awesome channels I highly recommend checking out. Khang is mainly pepper videos and he does really awesome crossbreeding, Jeb is more around general garden stuff and uses the Kratky method for just about everything which has gotten me into Hydroponics!

Here are a few of my plants I am growing,

Nice looking plants ;)

I used a teaspoon per gallon of fish emulsion and it seems to have worked well

I use the same technique, start slow and go from there. Once you nuke them with ferts you can't take it back. That's a 1/3 rate, from there a 1/2 rate and once you have 5-6" tall plants they can handle full strength.

Bhut then more time between applications..

On my bottle it said 2 tablespoons per gallon so I used 1 instead hopefully they don't suffer because of it lol
I can't remember the full strength dose my jug had, but it had a seedling mixture and it was 1 teaspoon per gallon. It's fertilome brand.

I think I had the same band! The seedlings look fine though so I must've just got lucky

I think I worried myself thinking I put a bit too much fert in and was giving too much water. I was watering everyday so I'm trying to let the soil dry out a hair.

Hey guys quick question. I've been having a little bit of issues with watering on my larger plants and figured I'm probably not being very successful with my seedlings either.

So I have them all in these small Styrofoam cups filled with 2/3 coco, 1/3 peralite, and the seed pod they germed in.

I've been watering basically small amounts, everyday. My concern is there is not any drainage on these cups as there aren't holes on the bottom.

Is it likely that the water is just sitting in the bottom of the cup forcing the seedlings roots to grow in the upper half of the cups? Is this normal even? Will they be able to overcome that?

We're having a really long, late winter. It actually just snowed last two days and last year I was swimming at this point in the year. So it is possible I will eventually have to transplant these anyways, but do you guys think I can leave them in these cups for another month with the possible non drainage issue, or should I think about upgrading to even slightly bigger containers soon that have a drain hole or something similar?

These plants are anywhere from 1-2 weeks old

upload photos to internet

Edit, fyi I just mentioned possibly transplanting because it was my intention to get them to their first three maybe 4 sets of leaves (or until the temp is stable and high enough to sustain them) then plant in the ground outside

Also, my trimmed tomato is sprouting roots which is exciting I've never had this work before.

And, the leaves of my seedlings are pointing up very sharp. Is the light just too far away perhaps?

Hey Teaks, I don't know what's sitting at the bottom of those styro cups but I'd bet it's just wet soil that your roots won't be thrilled with. Why no holes?
Honestly I just didn't think about it.

I have gone back on each cup and poked 15-20 holes around the side at the bottom as well as about 8 holes on the very bottom of each cup as well. Let's hope that will be sufficient.

Should be sufficient and might explain the gnat problem i saw you were having. Good luck!
Hopefully my mosquito bits gets here soon so I can start eradicating them! Going to do a low dose treatment of H2O2 tonight as someone else suggested.

PODS FORMING! On my older pepper, I call it my mystery choc scotch bonnet because it's from either a choc ghost or bonnet I got 1 pod from a friend last year and here I am with two ofthem planted.

Pictures to follow tomorrow. Be advised.. they're just the little beginnings not full pods by any means Haha

Here you guys go

My smaller "choc hab/ scotch bonnet" that I topped, just look at how low that V is and how busy it is down low. It's setting flowers but otherwise I thought maybe I should cut off some of those lower leaves they're coming out from every angle it seems.

My OW Kratky jalapeno, who says kratky won't work for peppers not only is it coming out of dormancy but is setting 2 jales already!

Last but not least my bigger choc something pepper plant. Got little pods showing up all over the top. I'd estimate, at least 50-60 buds coming along nicely.

Added some seeds to my germination tray, thanks to TBG all the way from Australia for sending me these varieties!

Yaki blue x3,
Pink tiger x3,
Trinidad perfume x3,
Brazilian star fish x3,
Aji Margariteno x3,
Aji pineapple x3,
Brown bonnet x3,
Trinidad scorpion x3,
Red moruga scorpion x3,
Carolina reaper x3,
Cayenne x bhut x3,
Albanian red hot x3.

Forgive the picture spam but it seems like these plants are just doing pretty well considering they're all cramped under really old Aero gardens.

Pictures range from struggling seedlings /transplants, New seedlings, small plants, mid plants, and mature plants lol.

Ive even got a few of the tomato trimming I took, that is rooting and starting a new plant, as well as seeds from the tomato I harvested in winter, so this will be F3 of the tomato plant in growing!

Lastly there's also a picture of my blackberry and raspberry bushes that are putting out nice leaves since I brought them out from the cold.

Did I mention it's been snowing and I was intending to put these out at the first of the month?

Plants are looking mighty stellar for being indoors. That Choc with all the pods is very happy ;)

Good work Teaks!
