Stetto's '21, ok ok ok, SEMI-glog glog

I wasn't planning to do a grow log this year, too much going on and little time to devote, but I've had a real good seedling season, so I thought I'd drop in from time to time to glance around and give you guys n gals something to talk about...

SUPER small list this season, but germ rate was outstanding on some varieties, so whaddaya do?

Pubescens
Aji Oro Rocoto (spawn of Aji Oro OW)
Rocoto Rojo (from 2019 harvest)
Turbo Pube (from 2019 harvest)
Hyper-X Rocoto (Canedog)
Awesome Orange Rocoto (Canedog)

Annuum
Chimayo (Harry_Dangler)
Nambe Pueblo (Harry_Dangler)
Hernandez Hot (Harry_Dangler)
Big Jim Legacy (Sandia)
Serrano Tampiqueno (Sandia)
YOLO Bell (Tradewinds Fruit)

Overwinter
XL Brown Rocoto (Canedog)
Aji Oro (Bhuter)
Aji Oro (spawn of Aji Oro from Bhuter)

Tomato
Prairie Star (Harry_Dangler)

There are many of each variety, the germ rate was crazy good. I'm convinced the Frog Farm Ocean Forest soil contributed yugely to that.

The Hernandez Hot was the only one of the Annuums to limit me to one plant, and the Turbo Pube was the only Rocoto to resist germination, though I did get one to hook. It actually sprouted the same week as the others, but was stunted to where I almost pulled it. But today I found true leaves emerging, so...

For a little scale perspective

I'm curious how this little guy will turn out and how long it will take to do that turning out, but hey, it's the Turbo I got, right?

I'm super happy with my Aji Oro crop so far, I've had to cut a bunch out and I HATE culling more than just about anything, and yet there are still 2-3 plants currently in each and every pot. This one is a personal triumph. Backstory: I had a total of two helmet heads in this planting, one a Chimayo, the other this Aji Oro. I spent almost two weeks trying to keep them moist so they could figh their own way out, but at some point I lost patience or faith, one, so I mechanically tweezered the cotys loose. The Chimayo was stunted but otherwise a healthy plant, but he Aji Oro had no cotyledons, no bud, just a stump. I figured the plant had been helmeted too long and rotted inside the seed shell. Oh well, right? There are two healthy plants in the potlet anyway, no loss...

I thought that too, until this morning:

The tip started to grow a tiny bulb a couple days ago, I simply let nature persevere, as it is guaranteed to do...

I just don't know how you guys do it, cut out perfectly good though overpopulated exotic pepper plants. I have no problem thinning anything out, carrots, lettuce, bell peppers...But this is hard...

Also note there are no Baccatum or Chinense this season, heck, I already planted more than I should have...

Hey Paul, that little Aji Oro stublette counts as a duck, no?

Ok, maybe a turkey or a goose, but it counts....right?

I do apologize for not getting around to the glogs this season, just too much going on. I shouldn't have a damm garden, but I couldn't help it.

a brief update on Anuums. The Rocotos are healthy and somewhat robust even with the plague of aphids, but not one has set a pod, and at this point (halfway through my expected season) I don't really look to get a harvest of note.

But the Serranos are diggin' the heat!! This is the 20 gallon container model, I do believe I may get a large haul from this alone. I just hope they ripen before frost!!

My hope to create a reasonable version of GIP's smoked Serrano Powder is within possibility!!

Harry_Dangler sent me some seeds this last Fall, including something called "Nambe Pueblo", which I can find absolutely NO information on. But the phenos seem to vary some.

And of course the Chimayo, which started making babies when hardly out of the dirt. There are four total plants.

The Big Jim Legend plants are coming along too, just a bit behind the curve as far as pod production. No pics of those yet...

So yeah, that's my basic in the bones grow so far. They all got a good dose of Alaska Fish yesterday, the 20 gallon Serrano got CNS17 this afternoon.

All is well

And for now, that is all....

Just not an optimal season. No end to this forecast soon.

Ugh 7-23-21.jpg

There's been some rain in the area, just not any closer to us than about 50 miles. Nothing measurable since the 3rd.

The weather guessers are claiming big rain tonight. Don't need big rain, need an all day soaker...

Well then, first update of the new reality.

Still no rain here. Lots of promises, but our lawn, but for the weeds is dead and likely will need reseeded. The rain barrel is dry now, so all watering is via the 480 ft. well, which so far has not dried up.:pray:

The plants are all doing good, but only two Rocotos are producing: A Rocoto Rojo

and one of many Aji Oros

Aji Oro 8-17-21.jpg

Temps are probably too crazy for them, going from 40s in the am to low 90s for highs. It's too close to first frost for me to worry about getting much for Pubes

Rocoto nonproducers 8-17-21.jpg

but the Anuums are doing well. Serrano peppers are well represented, and starting to darken, which to me means ripening

I already have Chimayos and Nambe Pueblos in the dehydrator--YAY!! :woohoo:

Chimayo 8-17-21.jpg

I've had the sprinkler on about 5 hours twice a week in the half-an-8th-acre, and so far nothing is drying up. The bells and Big Jims are above normal, for a drought, the Christmas Limas are really outdoing anything I've ever seen, and Harry_Dangler's Prairie Star tomatoes are GLOROUS!! No splits, no blossom end devastation, just BIG tomatoes. Not ripe yet, but we are drooling with anticipation.

The onions all died though. I have absolutely no explanation. They all simply withered up and left me with egg-sized onionlets. Go figure, eh?

Anyway, for not intending to grow anything this year it's going alright, all things considered. The move to CO is still on, shooting for mid-late October, which for me might as well be next week.

Thanks for watching, kids. Stay tuned, we'll be back when you least expect it!!

Good to see you'll have plenty of serrano pods for making powder, stetto. I'll be interested to hear how you like the Chimayo. I've been planning to try them next season after missing them this year. I hear they make a great red sauce.

CO's getting close!
I have an idea how those Chimayos should be: A friend sent me a pound of Powder from Lulu's Farm outside of Denver a couple years ago. It's why I started them this year, I ran out!!

Hey
Really pulling for a successful close to your season, brother.
I see a spot of red in that serrano tree! Hope springs eternal.

Good luck winding down your grow and getting packed up
for the CO move. Can't wait see what you do with your new place.

There are half a dozen red ones, and the 5 plants out back are all full of slowly darkening pods. I just received some cherry/alder smokewood for my attempt at a version of GIP's Smoked Serrano Powder, there is definitely hope in that regard!!

We took the Mama's '13 Journey to the shop yesterday for a once over. Not good, not good at all. 3/4 of the rear end is going to need replaced, along with the oil filter adapter cooler(?) and a tie rod end...$6000 in repairs or buy a new car, THAT will affect the move, at least what coin we'll have to facilitate it.

House prices are a premium here, what with all the refugees from the mayhem in Minneapolis, we can virtually name our price, so that's good. We'll just need to pick the overpass we want to live under in the Springs until we find digs there... Yep, crazy...

Your last post is a ‘good news, bad news‘ story!
I hope you sell your place for a lot and get the
car issue dealt with.

A Rocoto update---I actually have some!!

Like I've said, all Pubes but two are hardly even flowering. But the two that woke up and are trying to die right are doing so in a YUGE way...

One Aji Oro has what I estimate to be around thirty pods developing and is continuing to flower profusely

ji Oro2 8-23-21.jpg

And the Rocoto Rojo that was first to produce has easily as many

I have no illusions that these will ripen before the freeze, but they can reside in the studio under lights until color develops.

Kinda nice to see, eh?

Just got caught up on your Glog, Stetto. Looking good, brother, despite all of the hurdles you’ve been jumping!

I honestly got a little choked up when you told me about the @Guatemalan Insanity Pepper Memorial Serrano powder. Such an awesome project! I tip my hat to you, bud!

I’ve only tried growing C. Pubescens once, and it didn’t go well, here in Connecticut  Plants got to be almost 7’ tall and pumped out hundreds of flowers throughout the season but, they all dropped. One Manzano plant ended up setting about 5 or 6 pods at the end of September but, by that time, it was too late. I’ll definitely have to give them another shot next year though. G.I.P. sent me some Pube pods and seeds a while back and I’d feel like a jerk if I didn’t at least try to go for it again

We miss ya, G.I.P.! 🙏🏻

Good luck to you and the darlin’ bride on the move, man, and don’t forget to forward me your new address! I just might have some beers and BBQ rubs that I need to get rid of... ;)

Cheers, brother!

Hey, thanks Mike! Yeah the Serranos are starting to come in, I have the cherry/alder smoke wood ready, all that's left is to not mess it up when time comes. I've not smoke a lot of peppers, but the "recipes" I see seem a bit extreme: 2-3 HOURS in a 220 degree smoker?

I may need a bit of mentoring there....

Hey, Eric, have you thought of cold smoking.
Those recipes seem like they are trying to cook,
rather than smoke the peppers! Maybe that
would be hard to do with a lot of peppers at
once. I usually only smoke a weber kettle grill
full of peppers at a time.
