If You Have Ghosts You Have Everything - 2023

Ghost-Huntsville.jpg

Ghost, Propst Arena, Huntsville, AL, Sept. 2, 2022. Papa Emeritus IV and the Ghouls performing Year Zero. My 5th "ritual" as their performances are called. My daughter was right up front at the railing and took this photo... I was up a ways in a nice actual seat.

Well, another season is beginning. We have had a bit of a rough time here since last year. We had a sudden, unexpected death in the family last summer that
made the rest of the season unimportant, so my postings dropped off. I found out a couple of weeks ago I need hip replacement surgery... it's not bad or anything like that right now, so I am going to do it this fall so I can rehab over the off-season. I refuse at my age to have a year not growing anything at all. I'm finalizing my list for this year, but I couldn't wait and started one seedling which has already emerged. It's a Bhut Jolokia Solid Gold (thus the ghost reference). I'm looking forward to growing with everyone this year!

I had a few peppers in mind to definitely grow this year, one being a new selection from WHP (Peach Miasma), the BJSG, and one being this year's Mystery Pepper.

GLOG2023_01.jpg

I then perused my Box-O-Seeds to get the rest of 2023's bill of fare:

7 Pot Burgundy (WHP)
Bhut Jolokia Solid Gold (THP)
Peach Miasma (WHP) - BBM-Reaper-JPGS cross
Avenir (THP) - red habanero from West Africa
Purple Habanero (SLP)
Cristal (Sherwood’s Seeds) - mild annuum from Spain
Golden Greek Pepperoncini (Tyler Farms)
Targu Mures (Adaptive Seeds) - hot paprika pepper from Transylvania
Brown Jalapeno (SLP)
Emerald Fire Jalapeno (x2) (Totally Tomatoes)
2023 Mystery Pepper - like last year, a Scotch Bonnet

So many seeds, so little time...

Sorry to hear about your troubles, @JGBaxter59. Wishing you a much better year this year!

When I was getting my 2023 seed list together (during an internet search), I stumbled across the “Sunset Peach Scotch Bonnet” from Tyler Farms and it really piqued my curiosity. I’ve grown the CGN 21500 before (and loved the flavor), and the Yellow Scotch Bonnet is one of the best tasting peppers I’ve ever had so, I was very intrigued by this cross. After doing a search here on THP (from what I can tell), it seems like you’re the only one that’s grown it so far! Anyway, I ordered seeds from Tyler Farms and it’s probably the pepper that I’m most excited about for 2023. Now I’m worried because it doesn’t look like it made a comeback to your grow list this year  (unless that’s your “2023 Mystery Pepper?” )

Either way, best of luck with your grow (and your hip!) this year. I’ll definitely be following 👍🏻🍻

Thank you for the kind words @MikeUSMC. Yep, I grew that pepper last year and really liked it a lot. It got damaged in some storms, so I didn't get near the yield I was hoping for. If it would have stayed intact I bet I easily would have gotten 100+ pods from it. It had a really nice flavor, maybe a tad more earthy and less clean that a yellow bonnet, and if I remember, a tad hotter than the yellow HSH bonnet I grew with it last year. It set fruit like crazy and the colors were amazing to me. I kinda like to find and grow peppers that are off the beaten track as they say... I am definitely going to grow it again, probably next year. I have so many varieties I want to try it's hard to grow something again and again. This year I'm growing a couple of habaneros I had seeds for, but I did find another bonnet I've never heard of and am going to give it a try. Last year I did the "mystery pepper" thing just for fun, so I thought I might make it an annual deal.

Good luck to you, too, this year... I will be following you as well.

Where do you keep finding all those mystery bonnets? 🤔😮

I just stumble upon them, really. I'll start looking for a particular pepper or maybe happen onto some vendor's website. If I see something unusual or interesting, I'll go for it. I'm one of those folks that like to grow something no one else would think of trying.

Yea, actually back in 2021 I ordered this and Cappuccino Habanero seeds from WHP. He gave me as freebies a Bih Jolokia Caramel and the infamous Marabella Market Caramel SB, which we all know I grew that year and last year (from a cutting). I'm FINALLY getting around to growing it this year. I'm bad about ordering seeds and then planting something else when a newer, prettier variety comes along.

I've got all but one pepper up and running. The Cristal pepper came up as a helmet head, and I got a little too enthusiastic about fixing it and it bit the dust. I started it again, so soon as it pops I'll get it going... I'm not worried as I am still picking peppers here all the way into late October and early November. I didn't think I was going to have the Mystery Pepper this year... I sowed it and after 16 days no sign of life, so I sowed it again. Finally after 13 days, I got a sprout. It took 7 seeds between the sowings to get the one sprout.

I've got a couple of bells in the other cups, a yellow and a red. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, it is time for the big reveal. From the Hippy Seed Company and the Land Down Under, the 2023 Mystery Pepper is (drum roll please):

Mustard Adjoema Scotch Bonnet

I saw this and it looked interesting... I really like the color and shape of this little guy. It doesn't have that classic bonnet shape, but maybe the taste will be bonnet-like. We shall see when the time to harvest comes. It may just turn out to be some fancy renamed mustard habanero.

I already did notice that variety on their web site. Curious to know what it will turn out like! I have to say it looks more like a habanero than it does look like a scotch bonnet though 🙂

Yea, it might just be some some kind of habanero they gave a fancy name... they do sell what they call a mustard habanero, though. Maybe the heat is lower, or it doesn't have a strong habanero taste. Either way, I'll give it a try and see.
