AJs 2012 Season - A Pictorial Discussion

I am getting a one day jump on last season...today is my 2012 season start...

The Germinator has been cleaned, I am using new trays for seed starting and Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix as my grow media...

If any of you decide to use Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix, be patient, it takes as much as 24 hours pre-soak to get this light weight mix totally wet...I have said it before and I will say it again...this is the cleanest seed starting mix I have ever used....clean and light weight means better root growth IMO..

All circuits and systems are a go on the germinator...am stabilizing the temperature for the next 24 hours...as you can see, the upper box is about 93F and the lower box is 85F...I have to vent the top to let both chambers reach the same temperature...

something tells me this is going to be another hot summer....close to record heat again...so the season will go as mother wants it to...I am learning each year how to change my grow techniques and am adapting to North Texas...

hope you folks enjoy this thread...if anyone has any questions or comments, they are welcome...

Willing to bet you could go even longer with a couple landscaping timbers sunk in the ground a few feet. I have several thousand feet of para-chord that could probably pull a truck. I already have my stuff all planned out for this season...but once I figure out what I want to grow a ton of next year I may try it! Seems like it would really be the ticket for a row of cherry tomatoes. Thanks for the idea!

Your scorpions are looking nice and consistent with their tails just like you planned! I suppose your corolla theory is on point...wonder what a little selective breeding of other species could do as far as putting tails on pods. Cool stuff man! I would definitely buy some seeds from you once you're all dialed in!

Top of page 17 Paul!

Looking forward to your next update,
Shane

Tremendous results, AJ! Those Scorp pods are insane, like little tornados!

thanks Paul...I am almost enamored with the different shapes of the scorpions...they are my favorite...too bad I don't eat them fresh...

thank you....the one plant the photos were taken of is my favorite...from a scientific point of view, it would take a lot of testing to identify the genetic structure or specific gene that controlled the growth of the corolla and I personally think the strength of the corolla ring...simply the base of the flower petals...is controlled by two factors, genetic and environment..it may be the case that the strength arises from the environment only due to temperatures/humidity/light intensity/etc that change the material properties of the corolla ring...

I closed AlabamaJacks Exotic Superhots[sup]®[/sup] LLC down so I won't be selling anything else...but...I could probably be talked into it...I won't send seeds out unless I am pretty confident they will grow true...but being selective like I am should increase the odds of the pod type I am looking for...

very nice AJ, very nice. it was really nice meeting you at heaven on seven last year.

thanks buddy...it was really nice meeting you (and the other guys) too...you know, Jimmy Bannos has never said thank you, kiss my ass, or nothing to me since we were there...I can't believe I left him all those peppers and he has not even said thank you....oh well....his loss...

Since so many are following this great thread I thought it appropriate to post it here:

Let you know what is coming and what trends in wind there are (screen grabs will show you over time).

Very cool...

Ghosty... :P

thanks for the link Ghosty...I use live radar every day and that link will go good...

No problem AJ, glad to be of service, keep up the good work with Dale...

If you like geeky stuff like I do, you may want to give a look at Physicsforums.com,
my local hangout for the past three years, high signal to noise ratio, highly moderated, known as rhody over there.

A few samples of what you will find, no crack pot stuff, either. link, link, link...

I especially like the story in the second link. Pay special attention at 11:20.

thanks ghosty, but I am old school...and an old fart on top of that...this is the only forum I am a member of or visit...

I had 7 quarters of physics many many moons ago...enjoyed it but I had rather just enjoy my retirement right now...I don't want to know any more about anything except growing peppers and playing my mandolin and guitars...

Just watch the video in the second link, not about physics, very good story, you won't be disappointed.

First ripe scorpion of the year...from an overwinter plant that has a lot of pods on it....

Picked it, bisected it, cleaned out seeds and tasted the piece of placenta next to the penny in the last photo...WOW is all I got to say...21 seeds are drying on a paper plate in my computer room...room temp...

Very nice Ronnie  I hope mine start podding up, lots of flowers but no pods yet...... Your plants are growing strong south of ya :onfire:

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I know this is totally off topic, but I'm interested in learning the mandolin, and have played guitar for years. How much different is it, and if you already play guitar, should it be fairly easy to pick up?

Nice..............yum!

yes sir...probably gonna use it tonight in Pad Krapow

Straight for the placenta, crazy stuff. Nice to have pods already, can't wait for my first fresh ones this year.

the placenta is probably the best place to get a true taste of the pepper and heat IMO...

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

cool man...it won't be long before pods appear...

Nice AJ, that is one beautiful pod right there.

thanks man...the pod shape is not my favorite...I prefer longer tails...

I started playing guitar when I was 12...started playing mandolin when I was 52...mandolin is easier to play than a guitar IMO...it just makes more sense..

guitar is tuned 5-5-5-5-4-5 (talking about frets here) but the mandolin is tuned 7-7-7-7...take your top four strings on the guitar...EADG, turn them upside down and you get GDAE...that's the mando's tuning...what makes it easier for me IMO is once you learn your scales on one string, you have learned your scales on all of the strings...

if you don't know your scales, you will never be a good string player...

Nice pod Ronnie! I don't know if I would have had the discipline to wait until the first one was that ripe! Great stuff...1st one of many.

Thanks for the information, AJ! I first learned to play when I was a teenager too, and used to read tablature, but then got busy with college, career, having kids, etc. and didn't play for over 20 years. The past few years, I've been playing with the praise team at church, but I only do rhythm, not lead guitar, so I know chord progression, but not scales. The fact that you didn't start playing the mandolin till you were 52 gives me hope though ...

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)] AJ - do you use krapow (holy basil, Ocimum sanctum) or something else?[/background]
[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Nice looking plants, by the way. They are awesome![/background]
