stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Wow those are some great update pics Shane!! Explosive embers are great plants .... just watch them if you plant them outside though they self seed everywhere if you let the pods dry on the plant and drop. Would make good decorative garden plants for that very reason!!
Those piles of powder look the goods as well ... must make some one of these days!!
Thanks Tripp! Mine will be in containers...I will keep them in containers probably along the front entry, then plan to Bonchi them this fall.

Wow, nice update on all fronts... If you're brewing tea for the babies, are you ready to plant outside?
Not quite Rick, another month or so. I am working some organics/beneficials into the site/s I plan to use for my tallest plant Growdown. Some tea...some "other stuff" Won't be using it all at once either. This bucket will never be completely empty and will serve as a running starter for my tea throughout the season. I have all sorts of experimental plans for this growdown, may be an epic fail...I'm going for broke though fo-sho! Those seeds won't even be started until Thursday and will probably be indoors under the lights for a couple more months after that.

Plants are cranking along Shane, are you running 24/7? I use the square pots also and they are nice. Once your plants get a certain size the square pots will keep pinching lower leaves but it's no big deal.

Nobody told you the sowing date for the growdown was moved to May 14? :liar:

Awesome update, Shane. Love seeing what you master growers do. I started in October so I can be where you guys are in March...when I will get passed up! Plants are looking great and love the color on the powders. I can almost smell them from here.

Jamie told me June??? Yeah...they all pinch leaves once they start getting big. No biggie, just makes them less picture worthy!

Far from a master...Pic1, Pr0d...SpicyChicken. Those are the PRO's!!! Did a lot of trial and error last year with the soils and setup and got straight to cooking this year. I have been growing peppers a long time, but this is only my second year with indoor starts and with supers. Still much to learn, but that's why we're all here isn't it?

Shane,
Your grow is firing on all cylinders !
From the powdering of previous harvests to the plants of today....
This will be a stellar season for ya.
Those square pots are the same ones I use...............bigger pots........more bags of potting medium.........bigger plants.
Holy Carp!...I got scared when I saw the tea....
It looked like something different brewing...like some flower head concoction from Afghanistan............

The tea is the best source of organic matter available in liquid form. I use to get 1/2 gal free from the hydro shop each time I went in. Just had to bring back the bottle. I always managed to buy something though ..I used the tea as a foliar feed. It did wonders....

More and more new gloggers coming out of the woodwork this year ......Remember the "Claymen" from the original "Flash Gorden"..(Buster Crab)...................Hah
It's fun reading what everybodies doing whether its the same or different directions taken....we're all in this for the Spice.
Enjoy your day man...

Aight...so I snapped quite a few pics, but haven't had the chance to upload them. Now that I am sitting in my barracks cell room I can inundate you all with pics of my crap!!!

Tried to get a little artsy with some ala Pr0digal...but I am still not the master!
IMG_1192_zps6fe581c2.jpg

Manzano...

IMG_1193_zps678321e8.jpg

Peruvian Aji (PaulG)

IMG_1195_zps87da48cb.jpg

Same Aji...but lookie who decided to join the party! I think my germ rates are better once under the lights! These Ajis are the only ones that are shooting up. Everything else is nice and compact...these plants are gonna get big.

IMG_1198_zps6ad098fc.jpg

Charapita Yellow (Romy6) these little wilds are supposted to be Chinense, gonna be good!!!

IMG_1203_zps199590f8.jpg

PI438638 (Romy6) Excited about these too. Always look kinda droopy toward the end of the light cycle, but still growing like weeds. Striking resemblance to Romy's Mystery pepper in growth pattern so far...but hard to tell yet. Will be interesting to see them side by side throughout the season. Not sure I wanna solve the mystery though.

IMG_1204_zps96aab856.jpg

Another PI438638 same thing showing its droopiness next to the happy Numex Centennial.

Everybody getting all high tech with their feeding and watering schedule. Mama was looking out for me and decided to hook me up with some state of the art moisture monitoring devices!!!
IMG_1202_zps532d29f4.jpg

Terracotta earthworms! When their heads are dark...moisture is good! My water schedule is...if the plants look dry and the pots feel light, I bottom water a little at a time until they quit soaking up water and repeat as necessary. That was every couple days before I potted up...will probably be every 4-5 days now.

photo_zps6a60f576.jpg

Last of the pepper photos for today...these two (Explosive Ember lt and Numex Centennial rt) went to a new home today....Pour out a little worm tea for my homies y'all!

Here are a couple non's for ya...never grown flowers under lights before. Usually just pick up flats of them at the nursery. This year I gave it a whirl...
IMG_1200_zps7635b5df.jpg

Zinnias...freaking crazy plants!!! They are threatening to take over in there. They could use a pot up, but no way I'm wasting my soil on that! Root bound it is! Crazy plants, germed in a day and a half and growing like freaking weeds!

IMG_1199_zpsdd0ea388.jpg

Wish peppers were this freaking easy! Will harden them this weekend...and roll the dice on putting them in ground.

A few more with a bump! If not, there's always tomorrow!
Shane

First off a few of some new nons to me...
IMG_1209_zps0a5f779d.jpg

IMG_1208_zps834a68ab.jpg

Ranunculus...anyone that's ever grown them please share any info you got. Mama plant shops by perdiness, so these came home. They are stunning, but I know nothing about keeping them happy. Some google time is in order I suppose!

P1020844_zps1b52d884.jpg

Poseted this over in the growdown thread. Tallest Birgits Locoto is the name of the game. Have several strategies...this one is full tilt nute overload. The plant in this hole will either burn up...or grow like nuts. We shall see??? Have a couple more strategies I will try, but not gonna show my whole hand until later in the game...

Here are some of Sunday nights dinner...
P1020842_zpsfdca9cf0.jpg

Yup!!! One of my favs is back at da sto! Its time for a few foodie pics!

P1020845_zps4f252abf.jpg

Mama cooking up some deliciousness to pale in comparison accompany my grilled fare!

P1020847_zps4c0aade7.jpg

Do I have your full attention now?

P1020846_zpsdb36cb9e.jpg

Mr. Porter says "Yes Sir...full and undivided!!!

P1020848_zps136ec1f5.jpg

Yeah buddy...marinated overnight in, well a bunch of stuff then rubbed with some of my Red Lantern Habanero hot salt...and seared.

P1020850_zps7f3f1fac.jpg

Corn cooked 'till tender with husks on, peeled and silked then lightly roasted...

P1020851_zps24365fb4.jpg

Served up on our finest Chinet the only way BBQ should be served. Corn was buttered and dusted in Yellow Cardi Scorpion Hot Salt...mama's portion was a spinach/artichoke casserole that was out of this world also! Best meal I have had in a while!

That's all for now folks...hope you weeks started well!

DANG IT SHANE!!!

I still got 7 minutes till lunch and I just HAD to see that plate of BBQ maastery! Oh well, at least I'll be good and hungry for it in a couple of minutes.

I watched Paul growing those Explosive Embers last year and mama got a look at them too. Now she wants some of them lining the sidewalk up to the house. Have you ever tried any of the peppers it puts out? Just wondering if they're worth picking or better to just let the birds have at them.

Have a great week Bro,
Bill

OHHHH SHIT You smacked me in the face with that meal. I wasnt expecting it and now I'm drooling :drooling: :drooling:
Thanks Lady! Sorry for the puddles... :drooling:

Thanks Bill! I have the same plants for my Embers...lining the front walk. I tasted them last year...Jal heat, good flavor...texture was a bit chewy. Not the best snacker in my opinion. They do dry well and make good powders roasted and mixed with some seasonings for an all around table mix nobody will be scared of.

Just amazing growth on them bad boys. Holy smokes bro! You da man Shane!
Thanks Jamison! Yours are no slouches either! Lessons learned from last year are serving me well so far, I am sure I will hit some brick walls around plant out...and maybe before!

Geez...its torture not going home to the wife and kids plants everyday! Ughhh, I keep watching y'alls grow, but wonder how mine are doing??? Do they need water? Have they started to shoot up in their bigger planters? I am heading home tonight to give the family their Valentines gifts check on them and plant a few of the growdown seeds! Will try to snap a few pics of any progress I see!

Damn Shane, your plants are looking wonderful. I'm still not due to start for a few days :mope: You are going to be the great 5 star General of a massive green army. Killing any Aphid, slug or bug that might come your way..

Shane I’ve been ignoring this page, the food drives me crazy ¯\(º_o)/¯ with hunger! Brilliant work brethren :) Even though I had lunch a little while ago, I could eat again, hehe. I gotta tell ya the look of all the leaves are near perfect, you indoor guys have a grand advantage as they should be healthy and strong with excellent leaves by the time they hit the dirt. Keep on jamming mon!!!

I heard that brother! Nothing can make me more happy than to spend quality time with my wife and kids plants everyday!
