    seeds Seed Germination Issues

I never really wash my hands when handling coco and perlite but just to answer the question, I do rinse my hands when handling the seeds and I make sure not to touch them with bare hands. One reason is I picked my nose one time and was snorting milk a few minutes later. Another reason is I...

    seeds Seed Germination Issues

PT: The temperature outside is around 32C during the day and around 24C at night. They are stored in the same zip baggies they came in and were stored in a drawer.   OKG: Our house isn't insulated (just concrete and tiles) so the temps would be the same indoors as what we have outdoors. I've...

    seeds Seed Germination Issues

I'm not really sure what's causing my seeds not to germinate. I use a ratio of 3:1 Coco dust and perlite. I don't have a PH tester/meter but I never had this problem before. I moist the medium and keep it in a very shaded area. My other trial is I kept them inside as I thought the cooler temp...

    seeds Germinating Seeds in Water

Thanks for the info fern. I've sown 20+ seeds and ran out of coco today so rather then throwing these away, might as well continue.   Did the roots came out at all or they mold? If they did get molds, probably a drop of h2o2 might help.

    seeds Germinating Seeds in Water

I've read of people getting unwanted germination of seeds in fermenting recipes so this got me thinking. If that's possible in vinegar and paper towel, why not just in distilled water then sow as soon as they show roots. Anyone ever done this?   As an experiment, I'm leaving 5 datil seeds in the...

Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Ok I guess I'll just rinse mine as well and probably cover the top with a different mix (one without hulls) just in case weed seeds are present, they'd be easy picking. Thanks, PG!

fertilizer I think I found a new project! DIY fertilizer and insect repellants.

I think the mistake on my part was the fish wasn't in correct proportion with the molasses or at least I think it wasn't   It's warm here in the Philippines all year round so I keep it outdoors. Big round totes won't have an airlock lid like I have so the garbage bag with water on top did the...

fertilizer I think I found a new project! DIY fertilizer and insect repellants.

A lot of farmers here use molasses to ferment. You can ferment fruits, plants and fish as per a korean farming article I found way back. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find that book excerpt anymore but youtube has a lot of related videos on the subject. I've used FAA a few months back and my...

Guru's Garden - Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

Hi Guru, I got a couple of sacks of rice hulls from a miller and was supposedly going to be converted to biochar. Unfortunately, my first attempt got me in trouble with the neighbors so charring them is no go. I'm afraid to use them in my mix as I think they might be carrying pests, excess...

nutrients Anyone Using mhpgardener's DIY Hydro Nutes?

I was about to ask some relatives to ship me a 5lb bag of masterblend but all of them are cautious about customs handling it as dangerous stuff (explosives?). Not sure if the masterblend powder is categorized as ammonium nitrate that they think it is so I wanted to confirm if anyone knew of this.

    Sick Tomatoes

Thanks for the link HH. Could be a few things misisng in the mix to supplement the lack of nutes being absorbed by coco.   Would it be possible that the white substance under the leaves be molds being able to attack the plants while their immunity is low or it could be something else?

    Sick Tomatoes

My potting mix is 50% coco coir, 20% sterilized rice hull, 10% vermiculite and 30% compost. I water every 2-3 days and use slow osmocote slow release nutes.   These tomato plants have been looking like these from the start. I do notice some white flies but I do try to get them off every night...

Thinking of Pulling/Pruning and Transferring to Hydro

Just found out that my cousin picks mushrooms growing in the containers in the morning!!! He's been doing it for the past 3 weeks. So now I know it's an issue of overwatering and it seems like the spare hydrotons I used as much literally has kept the soil in favorable conditions for fungi to...
