I do both, and swap between hydro and dirt, though aquaponics is a bit out of my league due to time involved to get it "just right" for fruiting plants. Sub forums would be a nice addition, but not really necessary, as you can tell from the posts which is which.

Your choice of nutes are notoriously inconsistant between batches.   I used them 3 times---2 were fine, 1 killed my plants.   I now use Advanced nutrients sensi grow/sensi bloom 2 part mixes.   General Hydroponics brand is iffy at best.   Did you mix it correctly before adding to the bucket...

5 gallon buckets, garbage bags (to block the light from the roots) and aquarium pump from wally world is cheap.   I have done "ghetto hydro", and it worked.   But seems to work much better with equipment designed for the job.   Though the initial investment costs a bit, most is reusable season...

Grew a SB7J, BBG7, Aji Pineapple, Goat Weed and Thai Dragon together in a grow tent.   Planted some sb7j, aji pineapple, and bbg7 from the resulting pods.   Anxiously awaiting the results.

Move to a state that allows growing God's own best "medicine".   No more oxy's, V's or booze needed.   Most of the time.   I have personally seen it happen more than once.   A bit higher satisfaction growing and tending your own medicine than your consumables.
