Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

We had about two weeks of cooler weather and rain, followed by this last week back up in the upper 80's and sunny.  My plants have really responded by putting a LOT of foliage growth on.  My shady raised bed probably doubled in foliage volume the past 3 weeks.  I'd rather see green peppers ripen...

Turbo's Slog (Hot Sauce Log with a silent H)

Plum BBQ Sauce   Yup, another "not hot sauce" sauce, but I did put a couple peppers in so it kind'a counts, right?   Our neighbor brought over about 10 lbs of plums from their tree and I had no idea what to do with them.  After a bit of research I decided on a plum based BBQ sauce.   Ingredients...

    freezing my peppers for sauce

I actually freeze my peppers when making hot sauce, even when they are fresh.  Freezing helps break down the cellular walls of the peppers, with the end result of making a thicker, smoother sauce, that doesn't separate as easily.  And I haven't noticed any difference in taste of the final sauce...

    The Next Big Business

Here in the Pacific NW there are two trends I'm seeing.  For the single food item trend, craft cider is really starting to kick in strong.  I'm not talking overly sugary stuff like Strongbow or Angry Orchard, but cider made the old school way, often carbonated in the bottle, and from traditional...

    should i pinch flowers

Totally agree.  Experimentation is the fun part about pepper growing.  Because at its heart growing peppers is an optimization game.  There is an endless list of stimulus you can tweak, and different stages of the growing process, with the end goal of producing as many pods as possible.  And...

    should i pinch flowers

I'm no expert.  Have only seriously (to me) grown peppers for the past 5 years.  I used to mess with pinching flowers, topping, pruning leaves.  And the past two years I just left the plants alone and let them do what they naturally do.   And in my experience my untouched plants do just as well...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2015

I spent about an hour Saturday morning shoring up my plants for the storm and it looks they survived it pretty well.  I haven't found any broken branches.  The only things that broke off are some of the larger leaves on the cayennes.    I've got a cherry tomato plant that's about 7 feet tall...

wanted Looking for C.flexuosum seeds for 2016 season

It was from a member here on THP.  If they want, I'll let them speak, but I should probably keep their privacy   Yea, thats what I've heard.  I've found a couple sites that said it really helps if you have 2-3 plants in close proximity, as cross pollination really helps with flowers setting. ...

    The Pacific Northwest GLOG 2015

450 plants?!?!  I can't even begin to imagine what I'd do with all those peppers.  We have two fridges and a chest freezer, and I don't think it would be enough    For me, I've found the sweet spot to be around 20 - 25 plants.  Gives me plenty of pods to use fresh in the summer and fall...

Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

Thanks Genetikx!   Thanks Bill.  Nope, its a Aji Panca (or at least the seeds were labeled that way).  My plant has only produced 2 peppers so far this year.   Looks like we're supposed to get some serious wind today...40+ mph.  Time to shore up the branches the best we can, eh?

Turbo 2015 Pepper Growing: Keeping It Simple (Stupid)

Went out to check out my plants and was surprised to pick another 12 peppers after yesterday's haul.    I'm doing a bit of processing tonight in preparation for a couple sauces I wanna make in the next week or so.  I had about 3 weeks of peppers in the refrigerator, so I thought it would be a...
