Goin' to New Mexico this June

If you have access to a car, White Sands National Monument is near by. We go once a year and spend all day sliding down the dunes. Better if you go early, but even in the heart of summer, thanks to the white sand, it is cool enough until about noon. There is also Carlsbad Caverns about 3 hours...

Costco has Bhut Jolokia Pepper Jack Cheese

Just came back from Costco and they were giving out samples of Ghost Pepper Jack melted onto corn tostadas. It was the most spicy cheese I have ever tried from a retail store and it was really tasty. Most people here probably would not say it is super hot but it had a very nice kick that...

    Chlorine and Chilis

My potted plants absolutely hated water from the hose... My in ground plants had no problems with it. The difference was the pots were getting drenched with the hose where as the in ground plants got a gradual drip irrigation. I also had to resort to using 3 5 gallon drinking water containers. I...

    row spacing

I planted 2 rows in a 4' x 36' raised garden. The plants were 24" apart and they were touching each other by the end of the season. I was happy with it though and plan to keep them at 24" for this season. IF you have the room a bit more would be nice and if you don't have the room 18" would be...

    Patricks 2012 Pepper Grow Log

Ahhh beautiful plants, I'm sooo jealous! I remember how nice it was to have 18" plants with thick stems going in the ground last year. Looks like you have perfected the cup method. I just got back from the spring plant sale at the Chile Pepper institute. I was expecting plants looking like the...

    pests What bugs are these?

There is always a story about the evils of pesticides but here is the latest one about neonicotinoid insecticides and it supposed new link to bee collapse. I have been using Acetamiprid which is similar and it works amazingly well. I use it on my plants when they are 8"-12" a few days after...

    Orange Habs

Just last Friday I hand picked about 10 orange habaneros from the local grocery store that look exactly the same as yours with the cool tails. About 25% of the pods they were selling had tails. Flavor and heat was exactly the same as a normal orange hab, but they looked so cool I had to buy some.

seeds A few question relating to growing seeds

AlabamaJack wrote a fantastic primer on how to start seeds. It was on his Facebook page but he seems to have taken it down. Maybe he will post it here if he reads this. I used it as a guide last season and it worked great.

seeds Idea: Growing seedlings in 1 pint fabric containers

The pots I have are awesome but they are so tall they will fall over if you bump them if they are not kept in their trays. Once in their trays they are too high and have too many blockages to have effective bottom watering. I let them sit over night and they sill were dry near the middle. Last...

seeds Idea: Growing seedlings in 1 pint fabric containers

Talked to Root Pouch HQ. They said their one pint pouch has a 3" diameter and is 5" high. The quart is a 4" diameter and is 5" high. So that works out to 35 and 63 cubic inches of soil respectively. Just slightly less capacity then my 3x5.5 pots but being able to bottom water efficiently is...

    Chocolate 7 pots

Technically it is a Brown or Chocolate or Cafe or <insert shade of brown here> 7. It is not the same as Judy's Brown 7 or the Chocolate 7 I tried last year. It is most likely an accidental cross that has generated a new brown colored 7 Pot. It may still be delicious but genetically it will be...
