If you have access to a car, White Sands National Monument is near by. We go once a year and spend all day sliding down the dunes. Better if you go early, but even in the heart of summer, thanks to the white sand, it is cool enough until about noon.
There is also Carlsbad Caverns about 3 hours away really great if you have never seen it before.
Ruidoso is going to be dependent on the weather. Our rainy season starts in July/ August so in June if it is too dry... a lot of the forest is closed to prevent fires. Really puts a damper on what you can do. In hard drought years, even hiking is banned until the rains start.
In Ruidoso you can go to the ski area and take the tram to the top of Sierra Blanca it is over 12,000 feet and a fantastic view.
The Inn of the Mountain Gods has full gambling, golf and a lake.
There is also Ruidoso downs a horse racing track if you like that.
Then of course Las cruces is 2 hours away you can visit the Chile pepper institute. They have a gift shop and a chile research farm you can visit.
I will add more as I think of them...
