    Ginger

Cool!   I have a couple shoots and leaves coming up, but I have it covered in straw and some plastic mesh at the moment to prevent birds and squirrels from digging. I need to remove it and see what kind of growth I'm getting.

[May 28] What are you working on this week?

Everything is in the ground and in pots. Now I need to try to find some room for some leftovers   I have too many well germinated, leftover plants to compost them.   Made butter chicken one day and a fat lamb burger the next.

    Best poop for peppers?

I've used worm, cow, and sheep. Unfortunately, I haven't taken notes to see which works the absolute best. For in-ground, it's always either been cow or sheep (and periodic drenches of fish fert). For pots, it's always worm in the mix and a top dressing of cow, along with the periodic fish. ...

Show us your Plant Out 2018 Photos

My uncle has laying ducks - Welsh Harlequins. 2 drakes and I think he's up to 14 hens (just adopted 5 that a friend needed to offload). They're dual purpose birds, though I don't think he's slaughtered any yet. They're all in a roughly 20x15 ft pen.

[May 21] What are you working on this week?

Got all my beds planted except for one. Tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, cucuzzi, chard, cuke, and Mexican sunflower went in the ground. Just have the squash bed left to plant. Need to pick out which remaining peppers and eggplant to put in pots - only so much room and, as always, I germinated...

NY Metro Growers (or anywhere that is drenched)

Have you gotten your peppers in ground yet, if you grow there? It has been such a slop fest of rain and muck that I haven't done anything this whole week...until now. I got some peppers and eggplant in pots. Everything is a bit peaked due to all the overcast, which I assume is going to affect...

    Ginger

Just got my ginger in the ground. I'm hoping it grows well. I've been babying it for 2 months indoors and the roots/rhizomes grew out nicely. Another ginger grower in zone 5 (I think) has had his out for weeks now, so I should be good.    Anyone else grow ginger in zone 6 or elsewhere? Is it...

Help me match peppers to preservation style?

I wind up freezing about half and drying about half. Put another way, the peppers I know I like as powders - paprika, rooster, ghost, etc - I dry immediately. The others I freeze and use as necessary in salsa and other recipes.

scovilles How does hot sauce compare to real pepper on the scoville scale?

Both are good in and of themselves, but sauce is like putting a party dress on the pepper (straight heat) - hopefully a good one.

    hobbies Astronomy

Just read now is the time to see meteor debris from Hailye's comet. Some of the planets will be quite visible, too, in the coming weeks. Need to get the scope and kids out with me.

Best Burger you've ever had in your life?

I like my own lamb burgers (not that someone doesn't do them better, but being at the grill in my own backyard or stove top in my kitchen is boss). Local lamb cooked rare with salt and pepper, carmelized onions, funky local sheep cheese melted on, toasted bun, sweet tater fries. A mess to eat...

    pests Aphids

I interplant with basil and parsley. But (like honey badger) I have plenty of plants that attract aphids, mainly milkweed. Which becomes an aphid and, in turn, lady bug breeding station. With other nearby plants, I have marigold, calendula (the aphids have never gone for this), dill (does what...

    'lil Bastard

As much as I hate them (and do kill them when the local braconid wasps don't), they are purdy. That is definitely a chicken snack!

    Transplant shock

I don't break up anything when I transplant - goes right in the hole - but depending on the plant, I may give it a day or more in shade to recover before giving it full sun. In my experience, for annuals, they don't seem to get upset with transplant > partial sun or full sun. Other, longer-lived...

Young Plant in a Big Pot - Bad Idea?

That is definitely an issue with longer-lived plants. For example, I have citrus trees and sweet bay. I only pot them up when they're almost root bound and, even then, into a pot that's only a couple inches larger than the one they're in. Those plants like to grow into their pots slowly.   The...

    New Grower, Have Some Questions

Try both and see what works. In-ground you can amend your soil, with pots you create your own medium and have mobility. I do both. Most of my peppers are in-ground, but I've been able to see which ones do well in pots, so I can get the ones that need to be in the ground planted there. Good luck!
