    Hornworm on my pepper

But the first strange thing is, I had bagged this particular plant for seed and sealed it well at the bottom; I don't think a sphinx moth could've gotten under it because I weighted it down all around with pea gravel. The bag has been on for up to 4 weeks. The hornworm was just about fully...

[Jul 24] What are you working on this week?

Getting close. I've pulled off one Jalapeno and 5 rooster spurs. I have a lot of other peppers, mostly sweet, that are right there. The hots are forming pretty nicely, but behind the sweets.   Keeping up with trellising my squash. The plants are going crazy.

Super Hot Pepper in The Simpsons

Fantastic episode. "By all medical logic, steam should be shooting out of his ears." "His ears if we're lucky."

    f**k this

I had to extend the fence on one of my gardens so it exceeds 6 feet. Since then, the deer have been held at bay. However, now there is a bunny in my yard that can squeeze through my fence. I haven't noticed any damage to any plants yet, but when I first saw it, it could literally fit in a tea...

    RIP Williedog

Sorry to hear that. Good looking dog, sitting up straight, probably staring straight at his alpha.   Dogs make life better.

[Jul 17] What are you working on this week?

I need to check my hives for mites.  Hoping the early blight in my tomatoes doesn't get too bad. Find takers for cucumbers.

What kind of tomato blight is this?

I can't open the pics, but I have several tomato plants with early blight - starts in the lower leaves with brown spots, then yellowing, then death...

    Reaper Vodka - YUCK

I once tasted a guy's homemade Ghost mead. On the one hand, the mead wasn't overwhelmed with heat, but on the other, it just didn't taste very good. The pepper completely masked all the fermented honey flavors. It was a drink that wanted to be sweet but wound up being slightly spicy, vegetal...

KY Ren. Fair is over - Bitter Sweet

I'm always amazed when I grow a successful, healthy plant from a single seed. Part of the spiritual side of gardening.   About growing plants where they weren't meant to be grown - or where they didn't originate - well, humans and plants made an agreement that is aided by our ingenuity: you...

[Jul 10] What are you working on this week?

I planted beets and cilantro. Tying up my squash and cukes, which are going wild. Bagged a bunch of peppers so I can save seed.

I always grab a neighbor. In fact, I have them volunteer because I let them forage in my yard.

    frakking rodents

Robins are weird. I was once totally baffled that a couple beds of onion starts were failing miserably. I couldn't tell what was going on. By chance one day I watched a robin land in a bed and literally pull the baby onions out of the ground, one by one.

    frakking rodents

While drinking tea and looking at my garden this morning through the bay window, I noticed a nice-sized rabbit in my yard. Which is unusual, because there haven't been many in the 12 years I've lived here. Preemptive strike or wait to determine if there's any damage?

    Home Grows and Climate Change

So far, the only adjustments I've made are my planting-out day and garden cleanup range. I tend to plant out 1 week later than I had for, say, 8 years. Now I plant out in the 3rd week of May, whereas before I had lived by May 15. Cleanup just means my season has been extended just a wee bit as a...
