I was thinking of the volcanic soil thing too. Now that's something that's hard to replicate because even if you lived near Mount St. Helens or something, that doesn't mean you have the same mix of chemicals that a volcano in Italy has. Not to mention the time since the last eruption etc...

Agreed. But sometimes when you're not sure if it's too little of something or too much of something else, the growth tips can give some clues - like being dark, dark green when there's a lot of N in the soil. But yeah, I'd say the pics above look like it could use a booster shot of ferts about now.

I never did figure out what was wrong with it. It had fruit but some of them had mushy spots on them. I picked what was healthy looking and got rid of that plant in the fall when it came time to select my breeders.

Well in that case, I'm a bit curious what it got crossed with and what the peppers are like. I agree that vigorous healthy crosses are more fun though.

So what is it that makes them not grow the same or up to standards elsewhere? Climate? Soil type? Know-how? All of the above?

Most household stuff needs to be composted before you add it to the garden. If you live near a farming area and know someone who raises animals, you could ask them for some aged poop. I get free goat poop for the 'price' of cleaning out the shelter. Another free source I use is composted leaves...

It's getting to be that time of summer when pod setting will slow down or stop. I say let them ripen up then strip them all off to get some more growth before the weather turns cooler for the fall.
