What hath I wrought? Soapy Pumpkin Peppers

Seriously doubt it. SRP doesn't have that shape or color. But on the other hand, Trade Winds seeds are open pollinated, so it could be unknown cross of SRP. But again, I doubt it. It looks too far off.

What hath I wrought? Soapy Pumpkin Peppers

Yep definitely a baccatum. The corolla on the flower is a dead giveaway. Looking at the Trade Winds website, it looks like you got a mislabeled Bishop's Hat.   Disappointing that Trade Winds messed up like that. I've had excellent experience with them for non-pepper seeds. Maybe shoot them an...

+1 looks like a baccatum. Looks like an orange-y Aji Fantasy.

seeds No more small lots of seed permits?

I applied for a small lots of seed permit and got a very hard to understand, automated response a few days later. Basically stated that it's not legal to receive Capsicum seeds from the requested countries. I figured I'd try applying again, listing fewer countries, but I started poking around...

The Splendid Table (podcast) - Episode 662: Pepper Party

This was a pretty awesome podcast. Thank you! The only head scratcher was when Heather Arndt Anderson postulated that peppers weren't as popular in Japan as they are in Korea and China due to the climate. Thought that was a weird thing for a botanist to throw out there.

legal Fermented Hot Sauces | Why even try, right?

LA county might not specify, but the CA Dept Public Health doesn't give much latitude for hot sauce as a cottage food. Here's the list of approved cottage foods: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CEH/DFDCS/Pages/FDBPrograms/FoodSafetyProgram/CottageFoodOperations.aspx They specifically call out...

    Costa Rican "habanero"

Any pics of open flowers? If there is a corolla, I'd be convinced it's baccatum, but it still looks more like an annuum to me.

    Costa Rican "habanero"

That actually looks like a C. annuum to my eyes.

seeds What traits do you look for when choosing plants for seeds and crossing?

Yep..I've already got pollen bags on the prettiest ones :)   Wish I could preview the flavor though...with the plants being as varied as they are I have a feeling the pods are going to be all over the place!

    Nutrient Companies

I have not tried my hand at hydro, but in soil I am having good results with DynaGro Foliage Pro and TPS CalMag. Really like the folks at TPS. Great service.

seeds What traits do you look for when choosing plants for seeds and crossing?

Correct, if I had time to taste and select plants afterwards I would do so.   That said, I also find BlackFatalii's post very insightful.

    pests Got bugs

I've used them separately and together and prefer to use them together. IIRC the instructions on the bottle of my neem oil recommend adding soap. Not only is it more convenient to use together, it makes chemical sense to do so. The essential oils in neem are not water soluble, so they will form...

seeds What traits do you look for when choosing plants for seeds and crossing?

Asking because I ended up planting growing a lot (half a dozen which is a lot for me) of Primo x Purple Bhut plants this year. I didn't plan to keep so many, but these plants are just so vigorous and beautiful. But since they are F3, no two plants are the same. Some are have purple/green leaves...

    vendor whitehotpeppers

^^^Looks awesome! WHP is my favorite seed vendor so far. Better germination rates than Chili Pepper Institute (which were also good). High quality seeds, fast shipping, extra seeds included, great prices, interesting selection...just a fantastic vendor.

flavor Do colors correlate with taste?

All I know is that I love love love the flavor of brown pods. Can't put my finger on the actual aroma that makes me like them. Some say they are bitter. I don't really perceive that. But I also would not describe them as "earthy." Brown Skunk pepper really stood out to me. I did feel that it...

+1 on leaf cutter bees. They make those perfect half circles.

seeds Low germination rates from a particular vendor

Thanks for the replies. All the seeds I used this year were from domestic vendors. I did soak all seeds in tea except for one variety from a different vendor, and I got 100% germination from those.   I'll reach out to the vendor, but so far they've ignored two information requests.
