water pH Down adding phosphorus to water?

Sure thing: the ascorbate won't be lowering the pH of the solution very effectively if it's A) absorbed by the plants, or B) consumed by other means. Oxidation will lead to dehydroascorbate, which is a much weaker acid (pKa~8).

water pH Down adding phosphorus to water?

Ascorbic acid is actually a pretty decent buffer for lowering pH, and its a common ingredient in hydroponic water treatment products. The primary downsides are the cost and stability. Ascorbic acid is going to be a lot more than inorganic acids, no matter what, and its perhaps a little *too*...

    Pollination bags

Nice idea -- thanks for the link! It's avery practical solution for plants cultivated indoors (outside, things would get all melty pretty quickly.) Until Spring comes, I have time to give this a shot. After that, I need to figure out bags.

    Pollination bags

Hi there, Now that I'm hunkered down for the Winter with my mother plants established, it's time to look into "best practices" for proper pollination isolation techniques. I hope next year to start producing my own seeds, and I want to make sure I keep my strains pure. Since space is at a...

    seeds germinating pepper seeds

A pre-sowing treatment makes things go a lot faster, and often boosts yields. If the seeds have gotten a boost, the little germplasms don't waste so much time and energy trying to get going. With good quality seeds, the easiest way to do it I've found is to first soak them for 24 hours in...

Hi there, I heard that you might be around in East Africa. Is there any way to persuade you to collect some local peppers seeds? I'll trade you for some varieties I collected in West Africa.

seeds Seed priming to improve viability

Well... maybe. Sort of. I'll do what I can to give you something you can work with. First thing's first: there is no avoiding "chemicals", period. Everything you eat, tough, taste, smell, and breath in life is chemical. That's the nature of living in a universe made of "stuff", and its not a...

seeds Seed priming to improve viability

Heh, YMMV. For some of us (after years of labwork), protocols and method development actually are the fun and relaxing part. I feel a deep sense of joy and satisfaction knowing that each step in my process has been tested, that I'm doing things the right way, and I'm giving my plants the best...

seeds Seed priming to improve viability

Ah, yes, Posmyk's 2009 study is a good one. He looks at the effects of osmopriming and hydropriming at different solution strengths, AND as a function of temperature. At 25 C, the cucumber seeds had a germination rate of 99%, so any improvement would be difficult to measure without an enormous...

seeds Seed priming to improve viability

As a function of mass, seeds are easily the most value-concentrated stage of a plant's life; you can always clone afterwards, but each seed represents a unique genome for a particular breeding; the more that are successfully carried over to the next generation, the better preserved that strain...

The right way to keep strains pure

Exactly right. And more specifically, I'm asking if anybody knows where this has actually been studied and reported in a peer-reviewed publication. Since this is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world, and there are so many varieties, that somebody somewhere along the way would...

The right way to keep strains pure

Hey there, There are a lot of folks giving advice on prevention cross-pollination/outcrossing to maintain the integrity of seed strains, but does anybody know of actual peer-reviewed studies on the topic?

    Capsazepine

I've finally gotten a chance to get to the local university library, and use proper databases to investigate antinociceptive agents in the capsaicin pain model. Capsazepine is one in that category among many. More results to come. :)

For all your commercial chili seed sourcing needs

See? Those are the quirks. If you type "trinidad scorpion" under scientific name, you will get two retail shipping sources (Chile Woman and Cross Country Nurseries), and one wholesale source (Sunny Border Nurseries). Likewise, if you type "habanero" under scientific, you'll get a ton of...

For all your commercial chili seed sourcing needs

Hey there, I fouind this resource this evening, and I thought folks around here would find it useful: the plant info database Its a plant source database for about 70,000 different varieties of commercially available plants from North American nurseries. If you search using the scientific...

    propane vs. electric

Wow, what a response! I was actually looking at the same model of Masterbuilt as you showed off, salsadaddy. That settles it: I know what I'm getting for Christmas! :)

    propane vs. electric

Hey there, I'm looking at buying a smoker, but really, I'm almost a total n00b when it comes to this. There are some smokers for sale locally for a really good price, and I see a couple that look really nice, with the main difference being one is a propane heated system, and the other is...

    Capsazepine

A self-inflicted pepper overdose is something I think most people can handle by just riding it out -- that's been exactly what people have been doing for over 5000 years. That isn't really a problem needing fixing. As fun and enjoyable as this forum is, I don't think there's any likelihood that...
