Has any tried putting charcoal into their potting mix?

I would be afraid it will trap nutrients, and then release them all at once when saturated. The best activated carbon does come from coconut char.

Has any tried putting charcoal into their potting mix?

I have only put it in my soil after cooking with it. It is basically ash at this point. I think putting charcoal it in soil would also soak up the nutrients, similar to activated carbon.

5 gallon SIP vs 5 gallon bucket

Sorry. I don't have that many plant to justify that (55 wow). I may only have about 20 to 30 different plants this year. I usually only end up with one of each kind. I give the duplicates away to friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

pests INDOOR Insecticide Aphids, Gnats etc. NO BEES were HURT!!

Look for small critters or birds that can spread the mites. Do you have a lot of wildlife in your area? Skipping a season may not help. You may have to use something like DDT. DDT has not been used here in the USA in 20+ years. Sometimes you need to go to something that has not been used in 10...

    The Daily Disease

Remember the aphids are just like mosquitoes. Whatever virus or bacteria they have in them will be transmitted to the plant. I always find it better to remove the affected leaf or branch ASAP. If the plant in not salvageable it will go to my compost pile. I have been using the yellow sticky...

I would flush it with straight RO water. If you wait too long the burn may be permanent.

    The Daily Disease

Could be shock from aphid damage, and being transplanted. I would cut that leaf off and check every 2 or 3 days for more aphids. I have had damage like that from ants eating the underside of my TMS leaves. I only found it by looking at the plant. I think the ants were eating the aphids and...

container Raised Bed or 5 Gal Containers

I prefer the pots. I have some small 15 gallon to as large as 25 gallon pots. These are commercial black plastic pots. They can be moved if necessary. The 25 gallon can approach over 200 + lbs when full. I can also move them based on seasonal sun and shading.

pests INDOOR Insecticide Aphids, Gnats etc. NO BEES were HURT!!

You know, nature has a way of keeping things in balance. I don't like all the flies and stuff, but they are necessary for my compost pile. I understand you wanting to rid the pest. I just try to start with the least harmful stuff and work up from there. There are also some bacterias you can get...

pests INDOOR Insecticide Aphids, Gnats etc. NO BEES were HURT!!

Just because they say it's safe, doesn't mean crap. They said asbestos was safe too. I'll stick with Organics till I can't deal with the pest. I don't trust synthetics. Time will tell. If you grow 3 eyes don't blame me. Anything that kills bees should be used very cautiously. Without bees we...

    Fruit flys

I use the yellow stick traps. They fly into in and are stuck forever. Be careful not to stick yourself to the trap. When it sticks to your arm hair, ouch.

seeds Using Saltpeter to soak seeds in...

I've been really sick with a bad ear infection zapping the energy out of me. I forgot the other day to remove my seeds from the Salt Peter soak, and it went almost 30+ hours. I did wash them and placed them back into my glass containers. To tired to place them in plastic bags and paper towels. I...

Looks great. How do you deal with all the rain in London? It would seem almost to wet there sometimes for these plants.

pests *Aphids on seedlings! What can I do?

I use potassium fatty acid salt spray. It is a green safe insecticide killer. With my small seedlings, I use a bamboo skewer and dip the tip of it in the cap full of the liquid. I then touch the top of the aphid. It should either kill or paralyze them. Then sweep them off, and say next. I would...
