    The official TOMATO thread

lol I'd love to be able to consider putting anything out in a greenhouse in the dead of winter, here that's about -10 to -20C without the windchill.  Even growing indoors I'll be using either a 600w or 1000w HID light to achieve any sort of decent growth, I'll be happy to have a couple odd...

very nice, looks like the little ones are already enjoying their new set up.

Ripen till they aren't rock hard, bigger is also nicer, but seeing as they're the youngest tomatoes in the garden they're doing well.  Good to hear they're tasty slicer's or canned though, it's looking like they'll be the chosen variety to grow for seed this winter.  I'll take clones of the best...

nope, still waiting for them to ripen but they sound perfect for making sauces with their tart flavour.  What did you think of them?

    The official TOMATO thread

We've harvested a couple tomatoes so far, just the odd early one though as most are still a week away.  Our plants have been stretching a fair bit, which I think is caused by all the rain we've been getting (we haven't had to water once so far, usually we're watering a couple times a week by...

Peat is also an inert medium, so unless you're using one with ferts added you'd still have to fertilize often. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, I use to use the bricks as well but the first time I switched to a high quality horticultural choir it was like night and day, so much easier...

    Sharing cuttings?

Yeah, not worth it, plus the risk of spreading pathogens across borders, possibly endangering the local ecosystem just isn't worth it.

    Sharing cuttings?

I'd be in, except I live in Canada which would be a problem.  Unless of course there's other canucks out there that would be interested.   The key to sharing clones is making sure you quarantine everything you get for a couple weeks so that you can make sure they're pest/disease.  Otherwise you...

    Worm Factoy?

the tub's I'm using are something like 16"x24", maybe 16" tall, when it's half full with castings I'll place a second on top with fresh beddin g and food so the worms migrate into their new home.  So that'll probably be around 3 gallons.   There isn't really a set time to "harvest", they're...

    Worm Factoy?

I don't use a worm farm as I'm an avid DIY'er, my system is basically the same thing except made from rubbermaid's.  The yield of castings depends how much you feed them, red wigglers will consume anywhere from 1/2 to their full weight in food daily (i.e 1 lbs of worms eats 1/2-1 lbs per day)...

Upgraded/ing My Setup, Fixtures, and Bulbs... Couple Questions

Plants need both blue and red light for optimum growth, depending on the kind of plant red can increase flowering.  Typically for veg the ratio is 2 blue bulbs to 1 red, then switched for flowering.  That being said, I don't know if that'll make much of a difference with peppers as they flower...

    media Coco Potting Mix

I used coco indoors for years with no problems, either used straight or mixed 50/50 with perlite to cut down the cost.  The only time I had chlorotic leaves was with either poor quality coco or not watering often enough.  Low quality coco usually has high salts and more consistent particle size...

Why would you want to break the coco down?  My understanding is that coco provides the ideal structure for soil, retains water but also holds a lot of air, what benefit does breaking the coco down provide?

    advanced growing

It reminded me of the best question I was ever asked while working in hydro shops, two kids came in and said "we only have one, we know everything there is to know about growing but just have to ask how we start a seed"...  They didn't believe me when I said soak it in water for 12 hours then...

    Need some Growing Help

You've got all the signs of over fertilizing, yellow bottom leaves, leaf edges that are yellowed and curling, brown burnt tips.  Cut the fertilizing down, flush them well when they dry out next and they should recover.

    azamax question

Azamax is based off the active chemical in neem oil, azadirachtin, which most pests have a hard time developing an immunity to.  Which is why they've used it for so long in India without a significant loss in effectiveness.  It works as an analog of a naturally produced growth regulating...

soil Transplant from hydro to soil

It could be that large plants have a more developed root system that would include some tougher roots.  That may make the difference, with small plants all their roots would be soft and prone to shock.  Just a theory though, could be lotsa hot air blowing outta somewhere...

Thanks for filling that in Pepperwhisperer, I haven't looked into it all that much and have seen a couple different ways of filterin everything through.  I do laugh at all  the people  jumping on the trend expecting great results without knowing anything.  A co-worker who's setting one up made...
