This thread is for all the THP hunters to post pics, tell stories, and chat about hunting. Deer, turkey, geese, whatever!

***If you are against hunting, please post about it in a different thread, or start your own. Thanks!***

The archery deer season starts here tomorrow morning.
I got new strings on my bow a couple weeks ago, and I'm ready to hit the woods. It's been hot here though, and the deer haven't been very active. I'll be in a tree tomorrow morning, just because it's the opener, but then I will probably hold off for some cooler weather.

Good luck to all you hunters out there, and stay safe!

Good luck out there!

Traditionally just hunt the first 4/5 days of firearm season. Family has a shack on the Vermillion River (Kabetogama State Forest) less than 20 miles south of Canada. Deer population has been pretty low up there recently, but I think it's on the uptick. Successful or not, it's beautiful land.

Yep. It's beautiful around there for sure. I used to live near there once upon a time. Did a lot of fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling around Kabetogama and Ash River. I currently have a cabin about 90 miles north of I Falls, but I don't hunt there because a non-resident tag is expensive. A moose hunt is on my bucket list though...

Our bow season opened 1st of the month. I don't go out until a week or two before rifle. All you see are the 3 or 4 resident does with their fawns. The bucks stay away until they have girls on the mind. 90% of the deer I have shot were taken November 7- November 20th.

I agree the rut is where it's at, but I will be bowhunting in one of the few undeveloped pockets of suburbia. The deer don't seem to be nearly as cautious as they are elsewhere, and bucks show themselves regularly year-round. It's really weird to hunt there, because all I hear is loud traffic while I'm sitting in the stand. I'm used to hunting in silent woods with spooky bucks. It's the only hunting zone in the state that you can take as many antlerless deer as you want because there are a ton of deer and almost no hunting pressure (private land is pretty much the only option). Of course I won't shoot a fawn, or a doe with fawns, but I do like eating does!  :P

I was hunting with my wife's brother this morning. We called it quits at about 9:30 or so, and decided to stop by my house to get a pole saw to cut some branches around our stands that had grown in since last year. I stopped a block from home, and he crawled in the back of my truck. I pulled into the driveway, went in the house, and told my wife I shot a big buck and it was in the back of my truck. She put her shoes on and hurried out to look at it. I rolled back the tonneau cover, and when she peeked over the side of the bed her brother jumped up and scared her while filming her reaction. It was priceless! Especially played back in slow motion...

I would post the video, but she would kill me... and I don't know how.

As for hunting... nothing yet, but it's looking promising. Saw a really nice 10 yesterday at 83 yards, and a couple decent 8's within range. One of them walked right under my stand. The only does I saw was a couple I kicked up while walking to my stand in the dark yesterday morning (at least I assumed they were does at the time, but I'm not sure).

There is a fox den on the property I'm hunting, and they seemed to have multiplied since last year. They're everywhere! They seem to be constantly zigzagging though the woods, either alone or in pairs looking for prey. I don't know if they are some sort of hybrid or what. Most of them are grey, but there are red ones too, and they hang out with each other. A dog or something howled off in the distance this morning, and the foxes howled and yapped and screeched for the longest time... and it was LOUD. Sounded like there was a dozen of them. I saw a large flock of turkeys almost every time I went deer hunting there last year, but I don't expect to see a single turkey this year. Now that I think about it... I haven't seen any fawns around either...

Nice! Are they good eating?

I love antelope, and domestic goat and lamb, so it seems like something I would like.

I can't in the least contribute here. I don't hunt, and I have no objections to it. I have a lot of friends and family who do, though - and I benefit from there kills. Yup, I'm one of those guys.

What I am interested in is: how do you mix your hot peppers with game? For example, do you dehydrate meat for jerky and combine peppers you particularly like? Any other recipes you particularly like? I mostly get venison from friends, but have occasionally gotten pheasant and other birds.

Not red meat but I sometimes sprinkle a smoked ghost pepper powder onto my smoked salmon before I form the pellicle. Got it in a shipment from Pex. Tasty but HOT.

My favorite way to spice up game is making sausage. I use powder and/or flakes mixed into the meat.

Spicy smoked summer sausage is always a hit. For summer sausage, I usually just buy a kit. It comes with casings and spices. I add pepper powder to some, roasted garlic powder to some, etc.

This is the kit I usually use: http://www.lemproducts.com/product/backwoods-summer-sausage-kits/backwoods-sausage-seasoning

Dropped this sow yesterday. One shot into the back of the noggin, dead before it hit the ground.

Nice! Congrats!

I shot a nice 8 point last night with my bow at 42 yards. It dropped without even taking a step, which is always nice. It's supposed to get warm this afternoon, so I'm going to butcher it this morning.

I need to figure out an image hosting site so I can start posting pics again.

i changed my diet and now i dont want to kill nothing.

Been busy with work lately. Finally done taking coho eggs so I managed to get out hunting today. Shot these two. Took the bigger one first and his buddy stood there wondering what happened, so I shot him too. Loaded up the last of my 95gr ballistic silvertips today. Wish SPS would carry more soon so I can load up. Still have a lot of the vanilla 95BT so I should survive. Love those bullets!
