2019 - Raised Bed Zone 9B Glog

My first GLOG, here is my list. Will start Feb. 1st, 3.5" deep pots in tray. Will be using seed starting mix, as opposed to peat pods the last couple of years. After germ, will put under T5 light until mid march.

Plant out already??? Congrats...I am only risking it on two tomatoes that were looking pretty bad anyway. If they don't make it the local nursery has plenty of adequate replacements. Couple more weeks before I will chance a full blown plant out. Your starts look healthy enough...I think you may have some soil or ph issues causing the slight curling and yellowing, but they're gonna make it and will figure it out once they hit the dirt.

13 of 18 planted out, a little cool this weekend but the overcast weather been perfect for plant out. No major issues yet, hopefully the sun comes out later this week. Each plant got the same treatment:

I'm following your updates since I'm also in 9b - though I'm probably a month behind you. Since this is my first time and you've done it before, how do your plants hold up to the July/August 100+ temperatures? Is there anything you do to help them over this period?

It really just depends, my garden gets full sun all day no shade. I pretty much have to keep it mulched and water it daily just to keep them alive and they drop flowers like crazy. So last year I started as early as I could so that come July I could just let them die off. It really just depends how much you want to water and work during brutal summer. Heat wasnt my problem last year, hornworms ran wild and destroyed my crop.

Cool. So what's your plan this year? Same as last or are you gonna try and nurse them through the summer? I had one plant in a pot last year that just about survived the summer and put on a huge crop towards the end of the year.
 
I'm going to set up a drip irrigation system as I have a tap close by and it worked for my non-pepper plants last year. I'm also planting in root pouches by the side of the house so hopefully they will catch some shade for some of the day at least.

It really just depends if i can keep the pest at bay. I bought thuricide to see if i can keep the horn worms down, and neem oil to keep the grasshoppers of my plants. If i can do that successfully, i will let them ride to the fall, or maybe make new starts new first of July and set out in August.

Ca Wonder doesnt look that great, loosing bottom leaves and yellowing. I applied tomato-tone and watered in good, see if it improves.

The chili de agua is getting eaten by something, but only that one plant. Found this grub cutworm at the base, removed it added compost around base and watered well.

The jalabanero leaves looks curled and deformed, has been this way since it was young, will see if being in the soil evens it out.

So I was chatting with a colleague of mine who also does raised beds and she said that she uses cedar mulch, diatomaceous earth and cayenne around her plants and it has kept them bug/rabbit free. Ill be doing the same!

Question, how much if any do you pinch flowers once outside? Should I continue to snip flowers off? I topped two plants since they moved outside due to some insect damage.

Pinching the flowers does help force it to root instead of putting energy into pods. I usually pinch them and see better transplant growth myself
