Aji Panca?

Is the Aji Panca a chinense or a baccatum?

I'm trying to sort some plants to set out this evening and wanted to place the chinense in their own row, but the Chileman says it's a baccatum and Peppermania says it's chinense and I'm finding several other places on the web that list it as one or the other as well. So which is it?

I wish I knew! I have also seen them listed as being Annuums, so you tell me. lol

BTW, keep us informed of how you go with growing them. I don't know whether or not I have bad seeds, but I've had alot of trouble getting them to grow - they sprout alright but seem to come to a dead stop after the second or third set of true leaves. I finally got one going OK and the bloody mites get to it! gah!
 
These two Aji Pancas will go into the garden this evening; just dunno which row yet.
I guess I'll just have to wait until they flower to know for sure.

Actually there are Annums , Baccatums and Chinense Aji Panca Peppers.
I've grown all 3 from Peruvian seeds a friend brings back for me when she goes home for a visit.
BUT in Peru they call a lot of brown podded peppers Aji Panca.

Mine look alot like Silver_Surfer's with the purple stems... but I have yet to get one to even that size :oops:

Thanks for the NFO. Of the 3 types, which did you prefer?
 
I really don't have a preference since I use them as part of a rub mix.

I like using a mix of peppers in my rubs and powders rather than only 1 kind of pepper with other spices.
I do like the darker/chocolate peppers in general for bases for some rubs.
To me a lot of the brown peppers aren't really that hot but they have a different taste for some reason(in general,not talking about some chinense- mainly annuum).
I like a lot of the smoke dried brown pods for powders better than fresh brown ones.
I like Aji Panca,Chile Negro ,Pasilla and Peruvian Chinense smoke dried for part of powders and rubs.
They have the ability to blend flavors rather than overpower in my opinion.
I guess it is a matter of taste.
Smoke dried Aji Lemon(or some other baccatum),Peruvian Chinense , Cascabel and a super hot make a really nice powder mix.

My season is indeed over :(

I may hold you to offer come next season though (if you still have some to spare or have saved any seeds) :P

I'm not sure yet though, I'm still working on my grow list for next season. I'm trying to narrow down the number of varieties I'll be growing and grow more plants of the ones I do grow....... if that makes sense.

Did you ever find out what species your Aji Pancas were, SS?

Never did see any pods though as my plant just up and mysteriously died a couple months ago. :(
 
Nope, they were the first plants at the top of the soaker hose slope and died a slow death from thirst last season. :(

I hope to have better luck this year and hope you see some pods as well soon.
 
There are definitely Baccatum and at least 2 chinense versions that I know of:(
baccatum >> the Aji Panca is a close relative to the aji Colorado,and aji yellow both are baccatum
many Aji types are except for a few :)

The source I got mine from labeled them as baccatum, so I might just run with that... and blame the source if it turns out they are not. :lol:

And the mystery has been solved. Yesterday after pulling the guy up, I found the soil was infested with curl grubs. :mad:

As was the case with a few other plants of mine that haven't been doing so well. :(
 
Uhm.. just wait for the plant to have flowers blooming to see if its a baccatum?



btw SS, i really love the black pots you are using and nice healthy plants.:)
