AJs Backyard Pepper Porn 28 October 2011

It has been a while since I have posted either video or still shots of my plants so I figured it was time...

the year as most know has been a rough one here in North Texas with Record Summer heat...the AVERAGE temperature for the months of July and August was 90.6 and beat the old record by two hundredths...many nights not below 80 and many days above 100...and on top of that, no rain for 60 or so days...rain doesn't matter because of my fertigation system, but the heat has taken a huge toll on the plants this year...comparing last year to this year is simply unbelievable....

anyway, here are some still shots of some of my plants

Brain Strain - These seed came from Cappy a few years ago...

Wild Tepin - These seed came from a wild Tepin plant outside of Waco, Texas way out in the woods...the mother plant is huge...probably 6' in diameter and is I don't know how many years old

Red Savina - I have been growing these from my own seed stock...original seeds came from I don't remember where - Hey Salsalady...these are from last years seed...

Billy Biker Jalapeno - I buy my seed each year fresh from Burpee on the rack...can't see wasting my time stripping seeds when they are only $0.99 a pack...

Hatch - these seed are from Hatch peppers I bought from Central Market last year...and they have a good decent warm burn and absolutely fantastic taste...

Ristra Cayenne - peppers supposed to be close to 10" long but I think the heat stunted not only the plants growth, but the pods as well

NMSU Cayenne - don't remember exactly the number or name but they came in a packet that was sent to CPI members before planting season...they are great producers and only abnou5 15K scoville units...not hot at all for a cayenne...

Super Chili...don't remember original seed source but have been growing these for 4 years...great producers of decent heated pods even through the heat..

White Habanero - again, don't remember original seed source but these little pods are really hot with a great smoky smell/flavor...love to use them in my rubs...

Very nice work... The heat took it's toll here too. Lookin to try the super chili next year. I am also interested the Hatch chili all i hear is good things but I'll have to find seed for those.

Looking good AJ considering what we have been through this year. Very much looking forward to trying one of these Ristra Cayennes off the plant I got from you earlier this season. My plants are all stunted pretty bad too, ones that should normally be monsters this far into the season look like young plants still. There is always next season! I've got my fingers crossed that it will be mild and perfect for growing.

Question for anyone that may know the answer... With stunted plants, are the seeds affected as well... would they grow stunted?

-J

Looks great AJ, how are the cold nights? It got down to 45 down here. Plants are still ok. Do you do anything for the cold?

Ronnie, those Red Savs were/are AWESOME! All the pods I got from you last year I dried and powdered. Everytime I open the container, it smells SOOO GOOOOD!

Will you have any available this year?

SL

Wow that's beyond impressive AJ! Sweet set up. It would be nice to just sit out there, have a beer, and enjoy the view!

I've been thinking about buying some true Hatch chili seeds from Hatch NM. They make the best green powder on the planet!
Chili verde anyone?
I get so jealous of everyone that has markets and such close by. We're 35 miles away from the nearest WALmart! And I garrontee they don't have Hatch chili seeds, wouldn't buy them anyway...

Thanks All...I am remembering why I started growing peppers to begin with...I love this time of year when the plants are full of pods even though they are all green and I may not get ripe pods...but I still love it....

thanks SS...I don't think you will be disappointed in the Super Chili...during a good year, each plant will produce close to 1,000 pods...small they are but man do they pack a punch for an annuum...as far as the hatches go...they are one of the finest tasting peppers I have ever eaten...getting ready to pick a few and stuff them then grill 'em...will be good snacks during the Auburn game this evening...

AJ, how did the scorpions in the Smart Pots make out?

they grew fine...very bushy but aren't producing diddly squat...again, I think this was this years heat...there are about 3 or 4 that I will overwinter and try to keep alive for next year so I can have some 3rd year plants...

thanks J...watch out for those ristras...they have pretty good heat and are delicious fresh sliced on turnip greens...

I don't think the seeds are affected by the stunted plants...it is possible but I think they will be OK...I have a ristra I made using them that were just hung and dried and probably will start some seed from the bigger pods...you are welcome to some if you want...

thanks PJ...we had our first frost of the year this morning...temp got down to about 39F and there was frost on the rooftops...I didn't see any on the plants...and what I do about the cold is pray it won't freeze...when a freeze is forecast, I will bring in several plants for overwintering, but their production season is over because I drastically cut them back....

thanks SL...there may be some but not as many as last year...as usual, they well be very late...I will let you know...

bingo SD...I can't tell you how much I enjoy just sitting on my back porch with a cold one just looking and scheming (read planning next year)...I would offer to send you some of these seeds but I don't know whether they will grow true or not because they were not isolated...they are between my super chilis and tepins...

Rough year for you AJ. Despite the heat and lack of rain you have some hardy plants. Regardless of how I feed my plants they always appreciate something the rain gives them that I miss and would hate to miss rain for 60 days no matter how well I had cared for them.

Did you try the mister/shade cloth technique on any plants this season?

thanks SS...and I totally agree with "something special" in the rain...had the shade cloth up but did not get the misting system set up...I just didn't have time since I was spending it on my Mississippi Scorpion project...

Ronnie it's good to see you here. You still have some time to add to the pile. Good luck man.

thanks patrick...I will get some ripe pods, but how many just depends on how early the first freeze gets here...it has been a few years since it froze before Thanksgiving and I am expecting an early freeze this year...I was looking at last years weather and although it was a late first freeze, about December 5th, we were in the top 10 coldest winters on record, then we had the extreme summer...times are definitely changing...but the environment changes in cycles and we have had several "mild" winters in a row until last year...I would place my bet on first freeze where I live in west Fort Worth to be about 26 November...that gives me 4 weeks...

Looking great as always Ronnie

There isn't actually a "hatch chile" variety. Hatch chiles are certain popular Numex/Anaheim chiles that are grown in Hatch NewMexico
