seed-train ALL ABOARD THE AUSSIE SEED TRAIN!!!!!!!!!!

I've started putting together some seeds, I have 15-20 varieties so far, but I'll be able to add more with this seasons pods.

I may hold off a week or two before sending them out, so that I can add fresh seeds that I have low stocks of.

As most Aussie's won't be starting seeds until June/July, it may be a good idea to start collecting seeds now, from pods as they ripen so that when the train rolls around, you can contribute a greater amount and variety.

Great idea Shorerider.

I've got a bunch of peppers just getting big, and some that I've planted from seed a bit late are just starting to come into flower. I'd love to be able to share them all. I'm thinking 30-45 days to harvest?

Also, do we take photos or just write down what they are when we send the train on?

Cheers,

Sev

As it stands, the closest member to me is RaelThomas, then from there pcweirdness and after that possibly Hotrod64

I picked eight more varieties this afternoon, and have those seeds drying. I'll give them a week and should have something in the mail next week.

Here's a sneak peek at what I already have ready to go.

As you can see, I've packed the baggies as full as possible, this will allow multiple members to share a given variety. I'd have to think a maximum of 6 or so seeds per variety would surely be enough for each member. Thoughts?

Each member could post here what their package to the next recipient would contain, which would include their contribution.

Three questions:

Best way of drying seeds? Right now I pair them out of a pepper and and then dry them in a paper towel away from direct light and put them in the fridge - is that the best way to do it?

Where do you get those baggies?

Include photos in the baggies? I've got a couple of odd species which I'm not sure about (see the Pepper Identification for photos).

Re seeds, six seems fine.

Cheers,

Looking good guys!

On the labeling of seeds, a photo is not a must, but would be helpful. Should definitely include species, variety, name, source of seed and pollination (if known) on label. Also, is everyone up for the mystery bag idea?

Keep up the hype,

---UPDATE---

So I have made a rough plot of the route.

You should be able to figure out which stop is you (The start is at the lower end)

If you have any issues, let me know.

NEW PEOPLE - It's not too late to join! Just let me know and I'll drop you into the route where you fit best!

And that's all for now - the site still won't let me edit the main post... :(

So what happens to the left over seeds when the train comes to a halt?
Well....
I was thinking that we would send the train a round a second time, but without any new additions, so then all the people at the front get to snag a few of the varieties added at the back end of the train. After that, I'd say that someone hold onto the package, so that we have a good starting stock for when we send the train around again in the future.

If anyone else has any ideas, let's hear them!

What about maybe sending it over to our Kiwi friends, they can take what they want then add to it and send it back again?

Send it around twice and then give it to the kiwi's! Or the other way around.
Mmmmmmm, sounds good. If we get any Kiwi action then we'll give it a go I reckon. But I'd say we send it round us twice first, and then cross the Tasman.

Okay folks, I think that we've drummed up as much support as we are going to get. So, when do we want to fire up the locomotive? We want to make sure that everyone has plenty of time to get ready, but not leave it too late... I'd reckon April would be good, what are your thoughts?

So, I've got some Cayanetta, Loco Chillis, Orange Habanero and some Orange Ghost drying. Not really much though.

I've got heaps of pods that are green and should be turning soon...carolina reapers, brain killers, red bhuts, white bhuts, more Orange ghosts (around 50 pods), heaps of Butch T.

I'm not going to contribute much...but maybe I should jump on the second round? If we leave it to late April I should be able to contribute a decent chunk.
