Anyone tried Windows 7 yet?

I was bored yesterday and decided to grab a copy of Windows 7 to throw on an extra drive. I'll always be UNIX guy for my primary OS but keep a drive with XP on it for certain games that don't run great(or at all) in Wine or Cedega. So far I have to say that it's not bad. A major improvement over that last POS they put out, which I never even put on any of my machines.

If you have a decent system to run it on I recommend checking it out. Just don't abandon your current OS just yet(unless it's Vista).

Bring back Windows98! It had everything the average user needed and little that they didn't. It didn't take up huge amounts of memory either. I haven't really like any OS since.

I would agree.. 98SE was the ultimate operating system With the ability to still use DOS, Not some half baked DOS environment they have now. I have used every OS since DOS 2.0 and 98SE was the best. However I now use Vista Ultimate Nvidia Edition which is quite nice as well.

But I do plan on trying Mojave (Windows 7)

not a fan of Vista. I went back to XP media edition. I'm looking forward to checking out the new Windows though. I keep hearing great things about it.

I'm still using Windows 2000 for some applications.

2000 was excellent. The only reason I didn't use it more is because the only reason I ever boot into Windows is for games, which was the only area 2000 lacked.

Badger and CayenneLover, I hope you're joking about Windows 98, aren't you?!? Good gravy, that was the buggiest, most crash-prone OS I've probably ever seen, both on mine and everyone else's computer I've ever seen it installed on. This was the OS that gave Microsoft the very deserved bad rap with the frequent Blue Screens of Death (yes, the BSOD existed before this, but it occurred the most on Win98).

I've used Mac OS 8 thru 10 Leopard, and I've found them VERY unreliable at times, and even less stable than Win XP SP2+ is/was.

Overall, I've have to say Windows 2000 was the most rock solid and reliable OS for me. And despite all the negativity surrounding it, Vista has been very stable.

Oh yeah, Windows 7 from all the reviews I've read and listened to from tech journalists sounds like it could perhaps be even better than Win 2000, so upgrading to it is definitely on my radar for my fastest PCs.

Never had any problems with 98 at all. It never crashed or had any conflict with added software or hardware. I can't say the same for any subsequent Windows OS I've used. In my experience both 2000 and XP were a crock of shit.

When I had 98SE is was a little unstable, used to rebuild it regularly. I then tried 'Me' it was a dog of an OS was glad to ditch it for XP Pro. Still using XP on my 'server' box. The newer machine is running Vista Ultimate, it's been a very stable platform for me at least.

Played around with different distros of Linux, not convinced they're for me.

"this program has performed an illegal operation" you just gota love 98/se for that hey?

i have used 3.1 95 98 98se ME 2000 xp i skiped vista becuase of it STILL having problems and i am on win 7 pro x64 and it seems to be going decently well since its still un released but middle of this month it will be out. it uses less ram than vista dose looks better faster smother the x64 vr dose have some problems but thats inherent for all x64 systems. but its lovely finaly having 4+ gigs of ram.

so windows 7 will be out this month, do any of you know/think MS will offer some kind of discount for recent purchases that had POS vista installed to buy the new windows 7 ?

yes, the original 98 was quite buggy.. I used 98SE (Second edition) which was much more stable than the original 98.

I never had too many gripes about 98, first or second edition. Most people I know would agree. However ME is another story. That was one of the worst pieces of software ever written. BSOD's, random reboots out of knowhere, freezing, the problems just didn't end with that POS.
