Bhuter's 2018 Glog

Hello everybody! I'm late again to the adventures of pepper growing. Seeds didn't hit the towel until March 6, so I have some still below, some hooks, and some little plants. Not too much to look at right now but how about a growlist.

And here's the whole lot. I don't have much room...just what I can fit under a card table.

Mites are a bitch. Usually don't even notice theres a problem til it's totally infested. At least that was the case for me. Maybe I just didn't pay close enough attention. Now I check all my plants with an eye loupe every couple days to catch anything in the earliest stages.
You're absolutely right! It was too late once I saw the first sign. It slowed me down at least a month. I should look into an eye loupe.

This is the one I use. Got it from happyhydro.com. A really really small company. I like it cuz it has the LED lights on it. I paid like $15 for it. You can find it for cheaper but the owner is a super cool guy and I like supporting the little guy. I clipped a lanyard to it and use it all the time. I have a couple thousand plants right now and can't afford an infestation so it's helped me tremendously since I bought it.

What is the scientific name for these mites? I wonder if we have them here in the Netherlands. They seem like a pain in the butt...

Polyphagotarsonemus latus

It says that they're found around the world. Some European countries call it the "Broad Spider". Also known around the world as yellow tea mite, yellow jute mite, tropical mite, or broad rust mite.

I can't find any Dutch info on them, so I think they're more of a tropical pest? They might be found in greenhouses or more southern European countries. I can't even find a translation for 'broad mite'. Anyway sounds like they can do a lot of damage and apparently they're very hard to spot.

They're easy to see when you have 25 million of them all on top of each other like some kind of Chinese peking acrobat show haha but you'll need a pretty sharp eye to spot just a few of them.

My experience with the broad mites is a rust on new leaves. It's been several years since I've had them, knocking on wood (my head) ;)

We tossed the first crop of broccoli, and all the lettuce due to worms. Didn't even compost the waste. Just threw it over the fence. Suspected army worms..The second try of broccoli did well. Note to self, wait until November..

Thank you very much! And I think you're right about this seedling being a fighter, Uros. I checked on it the next day and it was crispy. I accidentally let the top of the soil dry out, and with the root not very far down, it started dying. After an immediate bottom water and continued wetness, it appears to be alive. But one of the coty's was receding and I thought it was over...but again I think it stopped receding. Here's a recent pic:

I'll keep my eyes on this one. Fight, baby, fight! I started another seed of it, just in case. I know, still starting seeds. Lol

Here's a little early season pod on my little clone of F2 Caramel Cinder.

Wait!! You gotta let us know if the seedling made it or not! Lol

Rust-like on new leaves, huh? That's good to know. I was thinking just deformities and stuff. What a bummer about your broccoli and lettuce. Damn pests.

Haha! I'm glad you asked. Here's the little survivor:

Yay! It's alive! Funny thing is while all of that was going on and I wasn't sure if it would live, I started another seed of it. That seed germinated and is now a hook. Lol

I'm rootin' for it, too!!! How is your grow coming along? Did I miss your glog?
I haven't glogged, but the grow is coming along pretty good. I usually worry I won't have enough to make sauce then I end up with an abundance... Not sure yet if I'll have enough planted just yet though so... I keep planting! Haha

Wow!!!! Beautiful!!! Ah, yes...Florida. You're a lot further ahead than I was expecting. I'm guessing the third pic is a bonnet. Very nice! They all look terrific! Hey, we share the same birthday. Lol
