Bhuter's 2018 Glog

Hello everybody! I'm late again to the adventures of pepper growing. Seeds didn't hit the towel until March 6, so I have some still below, some hooks, and some little plants. Not too much to look at right now but how about a growlist.

Lots of crosses, purples, & BBG. I also air layered a clone from the Caramel Cinder F2 last year (with the help of pepper-guru...thanks, Rich) and it's been in stasis until recently. Just starting new growth and already set a pod.

And here's the whole lot. I don't have much room...just what I can fit under a card table.

I think I have some volunteer jalapeño peppers coming up in my garden box. I had one plant that , the peppers produced zero heat, I just picked them and tossed them in the dirt. Funny thing is I had some hot jalapeño pods that I froze whole and I tried germinating seeds from those and had zero success. [emoji848]

That's very interesting. Did you dry the seeds after the freezer, or try and germinate them without drying? I'm just wondering which is the correct procedure. I have some old frozen pods that I'd like to try seeds from.

The pods were frozen fresh whole. I first thawed them out ,cut them in half, then let them dry out ,picked the seeds out and tried starting them using the damp paper towel in a ziplock bag.

That's exactly what I would've done. Silly question: were the jals ripe red or green?

Too true, the pods need to be uber ripe for seeds to work.

As for BER, it's a real problem here if I don't apply Calmag to the maters while they are setting. I've found the foliar application to be much better than added it to a watering routine.

I had just 1 mater with BER this season so far from 36 plants..this technique works ;)

Ripe red with corking.
I didn’t save any seeds before I froze them. Sometimes I just don’t think. [emoji53]

Had to let you know Adam that the Cinder plant I grew from your f2 seeds has a BBG-type calyx! Could be interesting... I'll post a pic soon.
That IS interesting, Brandon! The year I grew F1, I had a red and two yellow BBG's growing. It could be ANY color! That'll look pretty darn cool. Ultimately, I'd like to have the Cinder acquire a BBG calyx. I was thinking of starting a BBG x Cinder when the Cinder hits F8. Definitely keep us updated! Thanks!

I guess we'll see!

Not too much going on here. Stuff is slowly growing.

The squash & zucchini are doing pretty well. Hand pollinated 6-8 of them. Should have some in a few days.

The chinense's aren't as tall as the rest, but they're working on their auxiliary growth.

I was completely wrong about the Sugar Rush Peach I got from the nursery. It looked like a Chinense to me...short and bushy. But it stretched out and opened some flowers. It's definitely a Baccatum.

Interestingly enough, it also has multiple pods/buds per node. I didn't think Baccatums had that trait.

Nice to see the early stages of a killer garden; I'm already pulling plants. By this weekend I'll be down to container plants. The temps have been above 97° for 3-4 weeks now. It's brutal after 10:30am anymore. 'Yall have your winter, I have my summer...LOL
Thank you very much, Scott! It's still REALLY early, according to the Chinense's.
That's really gotta suck...and take some getting used to. Things just start producing, and it's over. Anticlimactic. Those temps ARE brutal. I hate the heat and we have 94° tomorrow and Monday. But the plants will grow. Lol. Thanks!

Squash already? Wow. On our work garden, we dont have blooms yet, but on my inlaws garden they had blooms a week ago. But I have cayennes producing [emoji16].

Very nice! My only producing pepper right now is a Biker Billy Jalapeño and that's putting out half-sized pods. Here are some squash & Zucchini from today. I always hand pollinate if at all possible.
