Bodeen's 2012 Grow Log - THE END!!!!!

Anxious to get dirt under my nails, so I might as well start this thing off.

Got an unfinished basement that is mainly storage. It has an old 1957 bathroom in it. I tore that out today and will be using that as my grow room as soon as I get it done. It is small enough a small heater will keep my temps in check. (Pictures of progress will come once I get it looking better lol)

Last year I built a grow table and this year I am putting up a shelving unit with grow lights on many of the shelves.

My one garden area that will be expanded on this year I believe. 40x30

My other garden which is longer, but not as wide.

Then I put this row in last year and my thoughts we strawberries, but it might be a row of peppers.

My motto is Rabbit eats garden, Gardener eats rabbit. They are the reason I have to fence the gardens

I also plan on doing some peppers in pots this year.

My tray of peppers last year went 71 out of 72 popped. Hope I can get these results this year.

43 is the lovely Bishop's Hat. Gotta grow it again just for the conversation it starts. Just now getting one to turn colors. Hope it is true that the pedals are sweet and the center is hot. Can't wait to try. Another large plant.

46 is the white habanero

046WhiteHabanero.jpg

47 and lets stick with the habanero theme, but add a little Sammy Hagar to the mix....The red rocker..,.of course this would read a bit better if I actually had red pods on the friggen plant instead of already picking them.

48 is a nightmare and won't be coming back..The Tangerine Dream

048TangerineDream.jpg

49 is a new pepper for me, the Atris. Not a bad tasting pepper.

53 is the hottest new all star in the garden. Rookie of the year last year, and is headed for the triple crown this year. Jimmy Nardello

058DouceEsp.jpg

59 has been appearing in the garden for a number of years like the gypsy. The Lipstick. A smaller, more flavorful pepper.

One more bump should do it for "This Week in Poddage!!"

That's quite a lineup, Bodeen! Reads like a who's who of peppers!
Great pod shots all in all.

Thanks. First year with this many and super hots. Really enjoying the garden

beautiful pics Bodeen. Thanks for sharing and sorry for the delayed bumps

Thank you very much

Today's harvest minus the stuffing peppers. Going to pickle the cherry bomb peppers. They should go good on sandwiches this winter. Picked my first Peruvians, Bishops, and Brazilian starfish peppers today. Have not tasted them yet.

Harvest08-23-2012.jpg

A buddy at work wanted some hot peppers, so I am bringing him a 25 pepper assortment to see how he likes them. Nothing much over the heat of a Hab as he has only done an orange once and said never again.

HarvestGift08-23-2012.jpg

My only orange manzano pepper pod dropped off. Full sized but green as a gourd. They have been a disappointment. Might start a plant earlier this winter and see if I can get some pods next year.

Tried my first Bishop's Hat just now. I have heard these peppers to be as hot as a Hungarian Wax all the way up to 2 times that of a Cayenne. My first ripe pod was like an upper end Anaheim type. Pedals advertised as sweet like a bell but tangier. Tasted like a watered down bell to me.

All the heat was found on the front third of the tongue. Some inside of the lip tingling, but nowhere near the tingle you get with a chenzo. A light warmth lingers on the tongue for a while, but what little heat there is fades fast.

Hoping that this was mild and not tangy because it was a first pod to ripen. Will continue to test these as they ripen.

Tomorrow I hope to try the starfish.

Amazing grow Bodeen!! Can't believe I haven't seen this log yet, you got some great growing skills! ;) Golden Cayenne is one of my favorites, how does the orange cayenne compare? Oh and that rainbow picture is awesome! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Melissa. I have only had a few orange pods ripen this year and I dried them. Once I start getting more ripe I will try one. I just tried my first Chocolate Cayenne yesterday and it has a wonderful flavor and maintains a lot of the Cayenne heat. Of course the higher up you go, the hotter it gets. I am hoping it grows true next year and that its stable. Would be great to have another chocolate on the list.

Hey Bodeen
Have you thought of stuffing the cherry peppers with ham before you pickle them? They were a favorite of mine when I was a teenager hanging out at the Italian sandwich shops where I grew up. They kept them in big jars on the counter along with the pickled eggs, pickled sausage and pickled frigitello peppers. No pickled cucumbers for some reason...

That sounds awesome stuffing them with ham. I love their cinnamon flavor.

Tried my first Brazilian Starfish this morning. Thought I was going to be disappointed. Later pods should be hotter. No heat unless you got placenta. Then it was very light. Get some placenta from up near the cap and then you get your heat. It is a back of the tongue/throat heat. Then that leaves and its a pleasant tingle on the front top of the tongue and inside of the lips. I found if I want to feel a little more tingle I just stick the tip of my tongue on the salivary glands it brings up a little more tingle. Didn't get a lot of pepper taste out of this one at all. Almost no taste. Later pods will be tested again. I will grow again.

Tried another lemon drop today and got a light lemon flavor out of it. This pod didn't have much heat at all. Kind of anxious to get enough dried to grind into powder and add it to my bread crumbs for my fish breading.

Harvest today wasn't too bad. Gave all my ripe Billy Biker, Goliath Jalapeno peppers to the mail lady. I have a gallon bag of them sliced in the freezer and I am good to go on them., If I am not using them fresh, might as well give them to someone who will be glad to get some fresh peppers.

Bhuts are producing well now, wish the lemon drops would ripen faster. 5 to 10 at a time is painfully slow. Frost should hold off until October.
