bonchi grow log (everyone can post)

this is the grow log for the bonchi challenge. i am trying to limit the rules down to a few. IF YOU ARE NOT FROM THE US YOU CAN STILL BE A PART OF IT YOU JUST WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE PRIZE THANK YOU.

RULES.
1. everyone entered must have a seperate variety of plant. meaning if two people want to both enter a bhut jolokia. an agreement must be reached to where one person must choose a different type. if an agreement cant be reached the person who was first to reserve that plant gets to have that variety.
2. you must reserve your plant(s) on this thread asap.
3. limit of two different varieties can be reserved.
4. you must have 3 photos uploaded before or on the day of the end of the contest. one photo showing height of plant. another showing the canopy of plant. one more photo of your choice showing your plants best feature or a really nice photo.
5. your plant must be 2ft. at max. height including pot.
7. if you decide to fuse or graft your bonchi there is still a two variety limit so you must graft either the two varieties together or you can graft multiples of the same variety together.
6. your bonchi can be any type of pepper. wild, super-hot, rare, mild etc.
8. all three photos must be submitted to this thread by MONDAY, DECEMBER 16TH 2013. That should give you enough time to grow, cut down, then regrow as a bonchi.

I would like to reserve my two varieties now sepia serpent and 7pot primo http://thehotpepper.com/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/fireball.gif

goodluck everyone and feel free to post other bonchi experiments in here just note that those are not the contenders

Another one started today...Charapita Yellow

Here's what it looked like earlier in the season...

It tasted like habanero lemonade...to me anyway. Very sweet citrus flavor with that signature chinense coming in behind it.

Thanks very much, I'll be putting it on the list for 2015 for sure as I'm already up to my ears and over for this summer coming. Looking forward to seeing it develop as a bonchi.

I think I'm going to bonchi one of my Cumari do Paras and maybe attempt a braided bonchi with a fatalii/Jonah/brown moruga or choc hab.

Will be a couple seasons I think though to get a proper trunk that's nice and thick and stout.

I'll post a photo of the sprouts soon!

EDIT:

Here are my Cumari sprouts, I'll bonchi one of the three.

And here is my frankenstein. I'm calling it the 5alive haha. Colour coded: Black is the choc hab, green is a white 7, red is the jonah, yellow a fatalii, and orange a jay's peach ghost-scorp. Goal being that I can get all 5 trunks to fuse into one knarly trunk and end up with 5 different fruits in the canopy. Might not work, but hey, I'll have fun trying!

Well the ones on the back porch are feeling the weather a little lately. We've had a couple frosts and although along the house it didn't frost, those cool temps are beating them up a bit. So I move a couple inside to see if they respond as well to the south facing window as the Goat's Weed is. I also bonchi'd another one today.

Couldn't find my Bonsai wire??? I ran out to get some more and couldn't help grabbing a couple more pots. These are pretty cheap...$6 for the bigger ones and the tiny one was $3...

Here is the candidate and it's future home...

Roots trimmed, did a little work up top too and...

Here she is...

Here it is with it's new neighbor, the Charapita which also got moved indoors.

Here is how the Goat's Weed looked on Sunday...

Here it is today doing very well and the main reason the others got moved in. I wired this one today but neglected to take a photo...

That is it for now folks! Let's see how yours are doing?

AR...are you goint to braid/twist them all the way up or just clump grow them? Should be very cool...what's even better it if you can get any of them to form an approach graft you may even get hybrid pods at some of the unions. Very slim chance but it's there...

anyway...not much movement on my Bonchi plants. The Goat's weed continues to push out new growth and the others are finally starting to show some signs of life at the nodes and I added another to the collection. Here they are in their new home inside...

Here is the latest candidate...

In its new home...the soil around the top of the roots will get washed away as I water the plant but will help it recover better from the transplant...well in theory anyway.

The Manzano is finally starting to show some signs of life at the nodes...but she's moving slow.

Here's the group shot in their window seats...

Hope everyone else is having fun with this!!! Show 'em if you got 'em!

Itching for an update!

My braid failed miserably...however I think that a stout little cumari do para may step up to the plate. This little guy is my prospect #1 and I have four other backups. I love the small leaves and short bushiness. This guy is about 6" tall and 1' wide. Hopefully by the end of this season or next I'll have a trunk thick enough to make a really sweet little bonchi that will hopefully supply me with an occasional little winter pod or three.

I am really liking the idea of these small chilis as bonchis like the tepins and charapitas and pequins etc. I think they'll look really cool when fruiting.

Wonderful thread. I'm planning on doing bonchis this winter :)

Aaron, maybe try a simpler braid, 2 plants maybe? I might mix a Jamaican hot chocolate (or choc hab) and an orange hab, call it the reeses pieces bonchi :p

Cool idea. I think I will try again in the fall when things quiet down. My issues this year should be tidied up now that I have a little experience starting plants from seed and all the details that go along with that. That said, I don't think I'll bonchi it, I'm gonna shoot for a tall braided stalk with a flat canopy in a small indoor pot that would look good on display. I still would like to have 5 or 6 varieties in there. Probably use my own seed (pending a successful harvest) and isolate so I know what I'm getting and would be able to tell if that rare type of crossing stc3248 mentioned occurs.

I've been eying a couple plants to re-pot as bonchi projects.  I've got a reaper that isn't going to last much longer since its starting to get pretty cold at night, so I decided it'll be my first of the season.  I plan on potting up another 3 or 4 later this fall, but they will be from my raised bed as their bases are much thicker.

There is a bonsai nursery / store a couple miles from my house and they offer classes in bonsai growing and care from 101 beginner up to advanced grafting techniques.  Think I'll be taking a couple of these.

Turbo,

Interesting process, I will be watching to see how this goes.  I will have to take a look at my plants and see what might be a good candidate for this process.  I will be following for sure.

Great thread! Just wanted to get a couple up for before and after shots. Planning to bonchi-ize all my overwinters, then keep the coolest small and grow the rest large next spring.

Red Bhut. Didn't like how this one was growing after 4 months so chopped it's head off.

Tabasco. A recent conversion of a 7 mo. old plant. There's a softball sized rock under the roots. May or may not keep it when re-potting to a shallow pot later.
