Brain Strain Pepper Heads 2014 Grow 500 in the ground (6/11)

Not open for further replies.
In 2013 I grew out 200 plus peppers many of which were super-hot peppers. This next year 2014  I am mixing it up and decided that since I have enough outside grow area and have enough room in my basement to start close to 2,500 peppers that I might as well go all out and grow it BIG.

The equipment: I have 4, 1000 watt HID MH/HPS lights, 6  double bulb T8 lights for seedlings, close to 3,000 nursery pots, seedling trays, 4x4, 6x6, 1 gallon, 3 gallon, and 5-7 gallon containers that I received all for Free from a local nursery who recycles all their plastic. I have 3 turbo fans for air control. My basement maintains 70-75 even temps with the lights.

I have 2 seedling mats one is single tray size and the other a 2x4 mat that hold 4 trays. My trays are 32 cell, 50 cell, and 128 cell so I have plenty to choose from. I started 400 plants in October that are now ready for their 2nd transplant to one gallon containers.

I transplant from the seedling tray after the 1st set of true leaves into 4x4 containers and transplant from the 4x4 after 4-6 weeks into a one gallon. Then from the one gallon they go outside or in a 5 gallon root pouch container.

I built a stadium arena style grow area in my basement to hold all the plants. This was done by building stairs that are 10 feet long x 5 high ( Cedar Planks bugs hate them) and each hold 100 seed trays or 50 plants in one gallon.

Soil: My seedling soil is a mix of  Sunshine #4, 2 huge bags perlite, 10 bags organic soil 2 cubic feet each and organic ferts, banana peels, egg shell powder, Epson salt, coffee grounds, blood and bone meal, and dolomite. My water is PHed to 6.8 and I water as needed with Alaskan Fish ferts. I spray for bugs 2 times per week using Neem oil, Pepper oil, soap, garlic and water.  I had aphids from OW and added 1,500 ladybugs and no more aphids. I still will spray as needed to make sure no pests.

My seed list will be updated as more seed varieties are added. This is an ongoing list and will be updated as seedlings get transplanted and more seeds are added for germination. I am beginning with 10 of each strain. (Except the C. Reaper I have 100 growing 6 weeks old) I usually put 2-4 seeds per cell with the understanding that I will thin out the weak seedlings.

So far that has not happened I kept all that lived. LOL it’s hard for me to throw out a seedling that took 2-4 weeks to hook and another 2 weeks before transplanting so I will probably end up with 2 times more then I planned for but either way I am going BIG. I have my reasons for growing so many plants, none of which have to do with me making new money. More on that later as this Glog is for Growing.  The starting lists is min10 or more seeds times 138 Varieties and climbing: Starting 1,380 plus (Pictures to be added shortly and then weekly)

UNREAL!
Can't even begin to imagine what this grow will end up costing in $.
( i know it's for food banks etc., but still!)
And the workload....i'm extremely impressed!

Good on you for sharing, especially the food bank thingy (which i don't believe exists in Denmark.....go figure?), but also for sharing here on THP
People like you makes the world a better place, so thank you

Ok so I need to update: I have added 10 more 72 cell trays full of seeds and transplanted 300 seedlings. 98% have germinated and some must have been not viable so will added a few more trays this week. I am so lucky as a new grow store just opened up less then 1/2 mile from me and 72 trays and inserts $1.19 each. I also contracted with a local greenhouse to keep some trays and plants for me until spring. Going to be a huge give away this summer!!

Smart move using a greenhouse.  I'm looking forward to growing a few ;) of your peppers.  I'll have to look into your new neighborhood grow store for grow trays.  Name or address of the store?

This 'grow' is not crazy - it's an adventure!

Its the Way to Grow Store , 1051 South Platte River Drive. www.waytogrow.net I stopped by today and got 2 more 50 cell trays. I was just going in to check prices on 2.5 sqaure pots ($.19 each) when I figured why not plant 2 more trays before it gets too late....he he he... ran out of room in my basement and now there starting to work there way upstairs.....wife didnt notice them yet..he he he... hopefully I am done planting as I need to transplant more this weekend. I am going to convert 1/2 my garage this spring into a germination and dry room. I am going to do what Spicy Chicken did. That man has the best grow I have ever seen!! If you have never read his 2013 Glog I highly recommend it http://thehotpepper.com/topic/36599-stc3248-2013-grow-log-seasons-greetings-and-seasons-end/

Way to Grow Store - we have one on Colfax, west of Union - where I usually buy my supplies.  Nice to find what I'm usually looking for.  I usually get my soil there, too.  This is a small store and I haven't ever seen pots or trays, so we may have to visit the one closer to you.

Your adventure is definitely taking charge!  I loved reading Shane's grow room instructions and know it's a great project for the determined, which is YOU.  Determined and adventurous.

Will be thinking of you and your transplanting - ;) .

Sorry guys this is what happend.....It Snowed and a driver lost control and POW down for a few weeks....

Last weekend was nice enough  soooooo.....I had 20 yards of garden compost ( 2 dump trucks) brought in and made two grow areas one is 15x150 just soil no black mulch and the other pepper
IMG_20140330_153103_zpskgoy2qsr.jpg
area is 30x150. I applied my 20 yards of compost, nutes, roto tilled

 and covered with black mulch....

IMG_20140330_153209_zpszwjohneo.jpg

and then I made an elavated Salad table, onion table, strawberry table, herb table and a few others,......I am not a fan of bending over and weeding.

lookin good over there, I really need to get in gear and get my garden area preped. Sorry to hear about accident but thankfully no one was hurt!

No injuries on the wreck but didn't have a truck mine was totaled so had to wait unitl his insurance kicked me some cash. Bought a used truck so I am back on the road. Rental car for a month.

Yea I figure I am not waiting for perfect weather as then it will be time to plant and too late to start cooking my soil. I saw an opening and took it. 20 yards of very good garden compost $18 a yard, a tiller and a weekend and it is done. 1200 feet of landscape material because I don't mow and hate to weed the garden. I don't need a yard because I am not a cow so I don't eat grass. all the seedlings have been transplanted just waiting for mothers day and will harden off one week prior. More pictures to come and I still have to go prep my main grow area as only 450 peppers will fit at my house.

First off. I'm glad to see no one was hurt. The garden prep looks fantastic. I like the idea of raised garden bed for herbs. That would save my back. Thanks for the update. I wish you luck with the rest of your garden prep.

This is going to be a great grow once everything gets outside.

I like the raised tables too. How much soil do you have in there and do you have issues with it drying out too fast and needing constant watering?
