Brain Strain Pepper Heads 2014 Grow 500 in the ground (6/11)

In 2013 I grew out 200 plus peppers many of which were super-hot peppers. This next year 2014  I am mixing it up and decided that since I have enough outside grow area and have enough room in my basement to start close to 2,500 peppers that I might as well go all out and grow it BIG.

The equipment: I have 4, 1000 watt HID MH/HPS lights, 6  double bulb T8 lights for seedlings, close to 3,000 nursery pots, seedling trays, 4x4, 6x6, 1 gallon, 3 gallon, and 5-7 gallon containers that I received all for Free from a local nursery who recycles all their plastic. I have 3 turbo fans for air control. My basement maintains 70-75 even temps with the lights.

I have 2 seedling mats one is single tray size and the other a 2x4 mat that hold 4 trays. My trays are 32 cell, 50 cell, and 128 cell so I have plenty to choose from. I started 400 plants in October that are now ready for their 2nd transplant to one gallon containers.

I transplant from the seedling tray after the 1st set of true leaves into 4x4 containers and transplant from the 4x4 after 4-6 weeks into a one gallon. Then from the one gallon they go outside or in a 5 gallon root pouch container.

I built a stadium arena style grow area in my basement to hold all the plants. This was done by building stairs that are 10 feet long x 5 high ( Cedar Planks bugs hate them) and each hold 100 seed trays or 50 plants in one gallon.

Soil: My seedling soil is a mix of  Sunshine #4, 2 huge bags perlite, 10 bags organic soil 2 cubic feet each and organic ferts, banana peels, egg shell powder, Epson salt, coffee grounds, blood and bone meal, and dolomite. My water is PHed to 6.8 and I water as needed with Alaskan Fish ferts. I spray for bugs 2 times per week using Neem oil, Pepper oil, soap, garlic and water.  I had aphids from OW and added 1,500 ladybugs and no more aphids. I still will spray as needed to make sure no pests.

My seed list will be updated as more seed varieties are added. This is an ongoing list and will be updated as seedlings get transplanted and more seeds are added for germination. I am beginning with 10 of each strain. (Except the C. Reaper I have 100 growing 6 weeks old) I usually put 2-4 seeds per cell with the understanding that I will thin out the weak seedlings.

So far that has not happened I kept all that lived. LOL it’s hard for me to throw out a seedling that took 2-4 weeks to hook and another 2 weeks before transplanting so I will probably end up with 2 times more then I planned for but either way I am going BIG. I have my reasons for growing so many plants, none of which have to do with me making new money. More on that later as this Glog is for Growing.  The starting lists is min10 or more seeds times 138 Varieties and climbing: Starting 1,380 plus (Pictures to be added shortly and then weekly)

Curious to see how your grow is coming along. Are you going to be able to fit thousands of plants on that property you posted pics of? I want to see a pic of the thousands of plants crammed into that basement lol. I know how bad it was to have 40 some full grown peppers crammed into a 6x3 tent...Hope all is going well and can't wait to see your progress.

Ok just seen your area is 30x150 and you planted 500. But if you planted 1 plant for every 6 square feet like I did that allows you to plant 750 plants. What are you doing with the thousands of leftover plants??

Update this week with pics. I moved to a bigger house in May 4/3 on 2 acres so I fit 500 here and still have 230 acres north of here on some rental land.

I moved to a new house so I have a bigger 2 acre yard. I have 500 here and am planting more up north on 230 acres.
Next year I am sticking with 1000-1500 plants.  This is a lot of work.....

I thought of you today when planting the last of the peppers - for a total of about 100 in pots and in the ground.  I truly cannot imagine 10++ times what I strained my back for.

Glad to see you have 2 full acres to plant a garden in - any other vegetables?

Just glad to see you're doing OK after the accident.

This is a lot of work.....     ;)     It sure is!!

Pic Time,

This is the 1st in the ground on June 1st

Very cool. Thanks for the pics. You are not messing around. No wonder you've been Mia. I think that's really cool your son saving for University of Oxford. Wish you all the best of luck in your growing adventures.

Thanks. Yes I was MIA because we had to move because I needed more room as I am going to also build a green house this fall. I want to cut my electric bill. Running 4,000 watts everyday for 16 hours times 4 months plus 4 kids is a little much. I have more pics from the basement grow and the other peppers but need to have the wife upload since there on her phone. Now I just wait until pod time

Congrats on the move. I was just outside giving a tour of the yard and garden and saying the same thing. I might find a plot to rent or buy next year. I like canning. It would be nice to grow my own food for myself and friends. I'm looking at building a couple hoop houses this year. A friend just built a nice size green house out of recycled dual pane freezer doors you see at the super market. I would love to have one with heated floors. Sorry. I'm rambling now so... Thanks again for the update and I will be looking forward to watching your grow prosper.
