Bulldog's GLOG

I am SO impressed with this website! I'm glad I stumbled upon it! Now, I am so happy I stumbled upon this subforum! I've been gardening for about 8-10(?) Years. I always threw in a few Jalepeno peppers. They literally grow like weeds here in south Louisiana! So I never had to do very much. Jowever, last year was my first year really growing. My son is now 16 months old, so it's given me a good "escape" from the house!

I'm trying to save my favorite Tabasco pepper from last year. My peppers I overwintered did fine, until about 2 months ago when they got nailed by aphids. Never dealt with those before! I've done everything I can. I lost most, but the Tabasco is coming around.

So far I've grown:
Jalepeno
Bells
Tabasco
Habaneros (all died - early)
Anaheim (some cheap assorted variety and it produced one pepper!)

This year, so far, I'm growing:
Tabascos
Habaneros
Jalepeno
Cumari? (My dad got a plant from a client from brazil... they called it a "Yellow Brazilian". Very hot and very small) this is my first ever experience saving seeds and growing from them!
Pablano
Bell

I am looking for some Big Jims and maybe some others. I know I'm probably a bit late to be starting seeds, but all the above were started back in January. I'm still looking for more things to grow. Just in case!

Here is a shot of the square foot boxes I've been using for my regular gardens. They keep growing! I've had great luck with onions, lettuces, cilantro, basil, and carrots. I'm really throwing time and effort into it this year! The soil is pretty fertile here, so my soil is local soil mixed with compost, cow maneur, and a bag of miracle grow compost/veggie.

Most of my peppers are grown in pots. Here are my tomatoes and some of the pepper starters going on the window ledge! Most started in peat greenhouse pots to get them going and then to the plastic cups before hitting pots!

I'll update some photos soon!

Any Advice for a new pepper grower? Advice on good peppers to try out?
A few more readily available photos.

I suggest the Bahamian Goat, Yellow MoA Scotch Bonnet, Brazilian Starfish, and Aji Fantasy. The first two have about habanero heat levels, the last two are much milder. All four are nice and tasty.

Thanks for the tips! I've seen others suggest the goats. I'm intrigued.

Welcome to THP from Minnesota. If you're going to grow Big Jims, you may want to check this out.

Good luck with your grow.

edit: I see you already found it!
Yep! I saw that about the same time I decided to start this GLOG. That sounds very interesting. I've subscribed to the thread and will be following others' grows to see if i can't pick up a thing or two from them!

I can't wait for the weather to warm up just a bit more. We had a mild winter here but it's still randomly dipping into the 40's over night. When the weather stays a little warmer is going to be on!

I love it when things start growing.

My outdoor garden is working well so far too. (Disregard the weeds)

My helper was inspecting the growth in the first bed.

Second raised bed in the ground.

Hopefully the crazy weather we're getting doesn't mess anything up. Tornado last week and bad storms coming through this week.

raised bed looks good
Thanks. The one on the left was built last year and it worked great. The one on the right is new. Apparently last year I got 2x8's. This year I got 2x10's. Oops. Just holds more soil!

Cruddy photo from my cell phone, but this is one of my better Habaneros that I am removing from my window ledge.

Planted in a #5 pot from lowes.

My tomatoes behind it are doing pretty well. I need to thin them out. They blew up and I never thinned them out. You can see lots of pots with two pants still growing. I don't figure it makes all that big of a difference at the moment, but I'll be thinning soon.

Oh and for the record, my current grow list is as follows:

Habaneros
Jalepeno's
Tabasco peppers
Yellow Brazilian peppers (i think they're cumari peppers "from brazil"?)
Big Jims (still haven't sprouted up yet...)
Pablano peppers
Bell peppers
Cayenne peppers

I'm also growing:
Strawberries
Green onions
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Lettuce
Arugula
Swiss chard
Broccoli (hasn't sprouted)
Basil
Cilantro
Green beans
Spinach
Peppermint
Carrots
Beets
Bee balm (supposed to flower and attract bees? Never did)

I think that's it so far. Most peppers and tomatoes are in pots. The rest are in the two raised beds. Made a real good salad a few days ago for the family.

My sole Tabasco plant from last year is really popping up nicely this season! Only a few plants made it through the winter. They were left on our covered patio and did ok.

It's really starting to grow. Lots of buds and small flowers are starting. Is it too soon? Should I nip these off?

Tabasco peppers starting to bloom.

I've found aphids on only 2 or 3 of my ~12 pepper plants. I killed every one I could. Sprayed off the plants and repeat.... I'm not seeing any more 48 hours later. There were only a couple to begin with. I isolated those plants from the rest of my grow. We'll see if it helps!

We have ghost peppers!

Two Ghosts germinated for me this week! The zip lock bag trick worked great this time. I used a coffee filter this go round.
