Buncha Malarky 2018 edition

Welcome to 2018
There is probably not going to be a whole lot of action around here until March 1st when I'll start soaking seeds.
I was overwhelmed in 2017, starting in January was not a good idea. This year I plan to pot up the plants in stride and avoid being root bound. Starting in March and outside in buckets in the middle to end of May. I'll probably try to sell excess plants locally on CL/FB as well, instead of trying to keep every seed I sprout alive myself.

2018 Grow List so far...
SB7J
7pot Cinder
PDN x Bonda
Peach Bhut-WM strain
CGN21500-WM strain
LemonDrop
PapaDreadie SS-Good Pheno from TGCM
Aji Limo Rojo
Aji Limo Amarillo
Aji Panca
Giant Red Rocoto
Peruvian Red Rocoto-OW
Yellow Brainstrain-Growdown

I'm really struggling to decide if I should grow Aji Amarillo, Big Red Rocoto's, and maybe even Panca now that I found frozen amarillos/rocotos and panca paste at the store now. And the amarillos and rocoto's take soo long to ripen...
I'd like to fit in Aji Dulce, Aji Arnaucho, cgn23209, SugarRush Peach and Trepadeira do Werner, but I don't know.

I've got enough BahaGoats in the freezer to last me I think. I actually might have enough Amarillos too now that I think of it.
I'm growing cgn21500 just to finally get it off my bucket list. I hope its good.
The more I type, the more bummed i get that i can't grow all these...

Just back from 2 weeks in Hawaii. Now it's go time.
I'm hoping by not starting on Jan 1 that my plants won't get rootbound and they will grow in stride until May.
Seeds meet water on March 1st.

24 hour soak before paper-towel and heat.

In Hawaii, I took every opportunity to eat some great fresh fish!
Fave's were Umeke's Poke Bowls in Kona

and fresh caught Ahi Belly tacos from South Maui Fish Company in Kihei

Some of the best I've had

Also I wanted to ask about the "Hawaiian" Pepper
a frutescens? They were selling Ag inspected seeds everywhere.
Are they any good? I passed on them this time.
I talked to a girl at a market selling not-so-hot hot sauce. She didn't know much of anything. Said they weren't native(I figured, nothing is), the peppers have been "evolving" on HI for "hundreds of years"
Any one have any experience with them?

I'll post more updates as we start to germ here

Edit sorry about the pic links...imgur apparently updated and I can't get good links on my iPhone.

I always get sucked into imgur when I click those links, found a couple good memes though lol. I'm jealous you were out there getting your island on!

I use postimage.org to load pics on here, works from my phone

Trepadeira do Werner, Aji Limo Red, Aji Limo Yellow, and CGN21500 are the first to pop this year.
Seeds soaked for 24 hours, then germed on papertowel, and I popped them into solo cups with FFOF+extra chunky perlite.
Now its a race to the surface.

Stickman's Moosebreath (blueberry/maplesyrup/yellow7's)
super good!

Welcome back from Hawaii Matt! Did you pick up any new ideas for hot sauces while you were there?
The Hawaiian Bird Chile is a Frutascens variety that grows wild on at least some of the islands. The birds eat the ripe pods and spread the seeds. From what Pinoy tells me, they have pretty typical Frut flavor and heat, and make great fermented sauces.
Glad you liked the "Moose Breath" recipe. ☺

I've got sprouts! Just about everyone is above ground.

actually the only seeds that have not germ'd at all, have been the 7pot Cinder...i'll have to try again.

I chose my horse for the growdown and potted her up from the aerogarden into a 1gallon of FFOF+perlite.

From my experience last year, Matt, they get more than 6 weeks in a Solo Cup, they get root bound. I was transplanting into gallon containers long before May.

...but they seemed gleefully rootbound, if that's any comfort!

Craigslist Light upgrade...T12's no more...
gJmf1M2.jpg

the gentleman i bought these from said the fixtures were relatively new so the ballasts and bulbs should be good for awhile. His office just decided to upgrade to LED's.

So i snagged these 3 six-lamp fixtures with bulbs and 6 extra bulbs as well for $35. I really only need 2 fixtures so if a ballast or bulbs go bad i've got extra.

are 5000k T8's ok for garden starts and maybe over winters? they are GE Ecolux w/Starcoat F32T8/SPX50ECO 5000k

Now i just need to do a little construction and build myself a couple new shelves and hang the lights.

PDN x Bonda F6 White
KXWhzHb.jpg

CGN21500
0DFJVNj.jpg

So grow area is roughly 4'w x 2'd x 8'h
with these new lamps i'd like to build some new shelves. should i build 2 shelves with room for about 3.5 vertical feet of growth or 3 smaller shelves? I'm hoping to put up some foam board insulation with reflective mylar or that reflective bubblewrap to help keep things a little warmer. basement runs 60-67 depending if the lights are on and what the temp outside is.
how far away do you usually keep T8's from the canopy top? with my T12's they were basically touching the leaves.

just a couple inches from top of tallest plants if you got a fan on them.. otherwise 3 - 4 inches above the tallest.. which you may have to top a few to keep them all level in height.. IMO.
