Capsidadburn grow 2012

Outside in my backyard are the remains of my 2011 season carcass sprawling all over the backyard. It is ugly! It needs to be reanimated and made ready for my 2012 season within 2 months.

Inside of course the season has began all over again. I am very pleased to say that I am only germinating 36 variety's so far this year. That is down 75 from last year. Pending some trades arrival from Finland, (7 more), that will be all. I have managed to keep myself out of the marketplace where the seeds tend to flow like white water rapids.

Here is my germ list for 2012;

Great looking harvest Mike! I love how you are always making some crazy jam or spread. I am looking forward to jumping on the powder bandwagon, but you are convincing me that I need to broaden my horizons!

Keep the updates coming and happy 4th!

Thanks Jamison and MGOLD!

I thought I would be dehydrating by now but still waiting for some to ripen. Be Dryin' soon. Hope to have lots of powder.

Well today is my 25th! Yea!

We decided to own a real TV. Isn't the standard 25th gift a 47 inch screen. I've had the same 27 inch behemoth for 20 years. I am the kind of person who still does not own a cell phone. So we splurged today. We are sitting down to some of our fave Tex Mex take out. We are happy with our staycation so far.

Here is today's harvest; I'll be jammin' it up tomorrow.

Happy 4th!

Happy Anniversary, and great job on the relish! Are those Cheiro do Norte similar to a habanero?

Can't wait to see what kind of jams you come up with from that big ol' harvest!

Thank you very much Bonnie and thanks for posting that recipe. My mother-in-law liked it and took a jar. The Cheiro do Norte are very sweet and mild. In that pic for the relish peppers from left to right is mild to hottest. I used a lot more of the Aji crystal's and the Inca Red drops than pictured for color purposes.

I would be happy to send you some of the Cherio do Norte's when I get some more and any thing else I am growing you would like to taste. Happy to share what someone else shared with me.

Tomorrow's jam is a larger quantity of the Hot Lemon Raspberry Peach I made a few weeks back. (uses Quintisho peppers). It is my fave so far.

The harvest from today will mostly be frozen, puree'd, and or dried. There will be more jams though! More experimentation!

Thanks Brian!

Well the jam is complete. I was shooting for 10 half pints and got 8, so the extra peaches made a slighty different color than my previous attempt. Still great taste and blend between sweet and tart. I think I would prefer the darker semi-translucent color of the first try. 3rd pic comparison. Heavily altered recipe to follow.

I was looking for a jam recipe using lemons because these Quintisho peppers are the most citrusy lemon smell and flavor I've encountered.
I had raspberry's and canned peaches so that's what it became.

Used 510 grams of raspberry's and 655 grams of peaches (to much) and 10 thin lemon slices (to much as well) I think I would prefer slightly more sweet than tart. I believe the slices are ment to be left in individual jars but can't bring myself to do that. I used 1 cup of the heavy peach syrup instead of the water from the recipe. I did not use the lemon grass. I did use pectin.

Have a great day everybody, Mike

Saw a couple of Green Darners in the last two days but they were to shy for a pic. These dragon flies love the bamboo steaks for perching. It's like having a humingbird feeder.

Thank you Jamie!

I got the dehydrator all cleaned up and started loading yesterday. Chance of rain all week and looks like a shower is bearing down on us in a couple hours. Got maybe a 10th of an inch earlier today. I'm hopeing!!

Great day everybody!

Mike, I just had a look through your growlog. Fantastic! I know you have heard that a lot in the past 10 pages but I am astounded by the quality of it all. Happy belated 25th to you and the missus. I'm on #3 (I think) with a little one who is 2. She goes straight for the Wild Brazil's whenever she out back. Luckily, for her sake, she hasn't figured out they are food. Yet... :fireball:

Conor

Thank you very much Conor for the nice comments! I hope the 2 year old does not make her way to those pretty yellow pods anytime soon!

I believe a good portion of my success is due to the Higgs Boson particles I sprinkled into my foliar sprays. The plants all seem to have an extra twinkle about them.

Yes well, I hope she doesn't either. But she will learn and become a chilli head like her mom and I. Higgs Boson? Reminds me of failing AP physics in high school. I realized then I better look to the humanities if I had any hope of reaching university. LOL

Keep up the great blog and wonderful photography! You are so lucky to be in Texas and not Canada like myself. Great football from little six man schools all over rural Texas all the way up to America's Team.

I do have to ask why on earth are you drinking Molson Canadian?!?! It's what we Canucks use to bathe, not drink.

But you did tell me Conor! Now all my fond memories of cooking meals while savoring a Molson are forever tainted!

I'm off to buy more Molson now, back later!

Well I had a little excitement, or concern rather yesterday morning. We did not get any rain from the previous evening and I had brought inside my dehydrator, (have to use it outside so as not to mace family) so I moved it back out to continue drying. After an hour or so while working in the side yard and I hear this tremendous explosion not only in my backyard but what seemed like another a block away. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a brilliant flash of light. I new it was the transformer behind my house which has blown before from too many Crepe Myrtle tree limbs touching the lines and transformer. The limbs have all been cut back so they were not the cause. I had begun to expect my dehydrator had overloaded the situation. I guess the other explosion was just an echo. The power was out for hours.

The outlet I have been using from my back patio is a GFCI outlet but it has been giving me a few problems after using a radiant space heater on it for a couple years. Since the outlet is 28 years old I think I will replace it. I set up the dehydrator on the front porch using a power strip in the garage and has been fine since. I don't like leaving my nice dehydator out front for much extended time. My family always has to hold their breath and run the smell gauntlet to leave so I started using the back.

I bought a slightly higher amperage outlet to replace it. Edit; My coworker's tell me my dryer could not have done this...

We did have an inch and half of rain yesterday evening which was quite nice.
Going to try to make the Lavender Jelly later today.

Have a great day!

Mike

Well what an unpleasant 21 hours. Power went out 6 pm yesterday do to storm, heavy rain and very strong winds. I was not home to watch a couple of my shade structures flying about. Mangled a few plants and a couple broken plant limbs but all in all very fortunate. The greater concern was my frozen peppers and the sauces in the fridge. I checked the temps at the time the power came back on. Still 28ish in the freezer and 45ish up top. I hope its all ok. I put some sauces, mayo and a nice beer in a cooler with ice.

Turns out a neighbors tree went down and took the powerline with it.

I'll post a few pics later.
Very tired, Mike
