Capsidadburn grow 2012

Outside in my backyard are the remains of my 2011 season carcass sprawling all over the backyard. It is ugly! It needs to be reanimated and made ready for my 2012 season within 2 months.

Inside of course the season has began all over again. I am very pleased to say that I am only germinating 36 variety's so far this year. That is down 75 from last year. Pending some trades arrival from Finland, (7 more), that will be all. I have managed to keep myself out of the marketplace where the seeds tend to flow like white water rapids.

Here is my germ list for 2012;

Thanks Prodigal and Bonnie, I wish there were no mosquito's but there are more than ever out there since the rains. It is unpleasant to be out for more than ten minutes due to the heat an the mosquito's. My harvesting is limited to quick attacks.

The Blue Jay made the mistake of being to low in the plant canopy and when I confronted him I think in his mind he was already imprisoned. I released him over the fence into a bush as opposed to dealing with a carcuss and a pile of feathers.

Bonnie, the puree's are a delight for sure. You know where the recipe came from and it is well worth spreading around for others to enjoy. The extended storage capacity makes it easy to use anytime you are ready. I hope to see pics of your puree's!

I think I am entering my least favorite time of the season, the hot summer. Slowed production, dislike of being outside to long in the heat, can lead to depression of mental state. (More bug pics than peppers too). Last year was rock bottom for me and many others at these months.

Great looking pods, Cap! You have the knack, my man. Your Inca Red Drop pods are much different than
mine. The pods on my plant are maybe 2" long for the larger, newer pods, and slender with a funny nipple
on the blossom end. They are kind of boxy looking, not exactly round. They are in the upper right corner:

I cannot believe you caught that Blue Jay, Mike! Unbelievable! I'm about to try a puree via AJ's recipe, Mike. But I need to go get lil' 4 oz. jars. Where do you buy yours?

And I'm with you on the summer. But I gotta say, my spirits are GREAT compared to last year because July was just SO awesome. Rain? What?! And probably less than 10 days of 100+ temps. I'm insanely grateful. And yeah, I liken our summers to the PNW winters. Its amazing how depressed you can get if you end up with 100+ for months at a time with no rain. There is simply nothing to look forward to. I have no idea how American Indians and early Euro settlers handled this kind of thing.

Tepins look fun. Dacia and I gathered some up from a neighbor out here in Western Travis County. So we'll see how those do for me next year. I plan on planting a few in the garden and a few in choice places around the yard.

Making me some chocolate bhut/chocolate hab smoked powder right now. Trying to strip the plants and see if I can get one more round of fruiting here this week as temp are sort of ping ponging between very much too hot and almost bearable for fruit producton. We'll see. Certainly my regular bhut that I stripped two weeks ago has baby fruit again. No WAY I would've pulled that of last year at this time. Hell, probably not last year in late June.

Push on, Mike!

Thanks Paul, Interesting to know about the pod difference. I grew them last year and loved them. They are shaped slightly different this year but they were a little smaller last year, but I attributed to our nasty drought in 2011. I got my seeds from Beth at Peppermainia for 2011, but can't remember if I still used those or my own saved seeds. I am also growing the Inca Berry, no pods ripe yet but they look just like the red pod under the 2 inch mark on your ruler pic.

Thank for the encouragement Eric! I get the jars at any HEB or Central Market. 8 oz and 4 oz.. Coincidently they have the Blue Agave Nector too!
Enjoy! Are you doing these projects inside or outside?

Interesting indeed. I also used seed from Beth this year.
It's a very productive plant, can't wait until it's full of red
pods! The little pod you mentioned is the first pod from a
fatali x red savina, really small and round. The later pods
are increasing in size, and looking gnarlier.

Mike,

My smoked powders are an indoor affair. I've been using a Cameron stovetop smoker, which makes for small batches (about 300g if you really pack 'em in), but smokes WAY faster than a large smoker (25 minutes to get a very robust smoke flavor) and doesn't smoke up the house. I keep the stove vent on medium and there is some smell, but no worse (probably better) than cooking bacon in the house.

I use the oven to dehydrate them on the bread proofing setting, or the convection setting at just under 200 degrees. Regular bake at 200 works as well with a peek every now and then. This give a nice roasted pepper smell in the house without any discomfort. My wife loves it. My daughter and son don't seem to care.

I haven't tried to cook down a puree yet, so I can't say that will go as well. :D

Wow Mike everytime I check out your glog I see something and learn something I didn't know. Thank you :fireball:

Now please tell us how on earth you caught that pesty Blue Jay :shh: Maybe video the next one

Well thank you very much Jamie! I feel good about that. I'm just passing along stuff I've learned along the way.

Last weekend I managed to pickle a couple jars of Inca Red Drops. Here's a few pics. There are a couple Wild Brazil pods in there too.
July292012011.jpg

Here are some examples of antique food glass behind the Inca Red Drops. A former hobby. Left side is a Chas Gulden New York Mustard. Next is a large cathedral pickle jar. On the right are four resteraunt table sauce or condiment jars that would have fit in a silver or pewter stand.

Close up ; The one on the left is from around 1860. Next to it is around 1880 and the two on the right are around 1895. They were all made of clear glass origionally but the manganese content when exposed over time to ultraviolet light changed to amethyst.

Also last weekend I made some Trinidad Scorpion Butch T puree.

I love your glog, Mike; lots of good info and always a cool pic or two!
How is the flavor on those pickled Inca Red Drops? That's a productive
plant, so I have to figure out what to do with the pods!

Thanks Paul! I had pickled some last year whole and really enjoyed them on hot dogs with relish. Their medium heat and juicy flesh carry over well in the pickleing. Thanks for the nice comments too.

Mike

Lookin good mike! What is your recipe for the purée and one an awesomeness scale how awesome is it?? I have a gallon of pods already, with no sign of letting up. I don't need a hundred pods worth of powder and you are always putting something in a jar, so why not give that a try??

Thanks Matt, The recipe I got from Alabama Jack and I posted it back on page 11, post 215. I also put a link there for his thread on the subject this season.

The puree's are unaimously loved by all. It is a little bit of work to de-seed and vein, but well worth it. I do not have a preasure canner so I use the boiled water bath for 10 minutes minimum. Be sure to boil your jars and lids for 10 minutes prior to filling them with the puree. Pack the puree in good with a spoon trying to get rid of all air bubbles. Wipe the top and threads clean with paper towel and apply the screw band over the lids and place in the water bath so that they are covered and boil 10 min.

Good luck
Mike

Thank you very much, Ausmith! Thanks for stopping by too!

Well yesterday I made some barbeque sauce. I am not as trilled with it as I thought I would be but it is still good. Here is a link to the recipe which I only added a tsp of cherry smoked Aji Lima Rojo and I made my own Chipotle with Zapotec Jalapenos.

I have been having internet problem the last two days but appear to be fixed. Just in time for my Mars hardware to land safely I hope(just after midnite central time). Once it lands it will start searching for rare and unusual spices to collect and stash. The onboard chemical analyisis will determine the quality. Spice production will begin immeadiatly. The spice must flow! :P

Thanks Gary! I do love to quote Dune quite a bit!

Yes Nasa sure made it look easy with the crazy skycrane landing last night , early this morning. I am quite happy it is my third Mars mission I have manufactured hardware for. The first one is still being used almost 9 years later. Gary I might send you a pm with some pics of it. It's all geology related in a sense.

I was concerned about the never before attempted technique. They were in complete control, while not being in control at all!

Mike

Mike,

Wow, your work has been on three Mars missions! And the first one is still working! That is so freaking cool...I would love to see some pix! It's definitely geology in any and every sense of the word!!! How do you sleep at night without thinking about what's going on all those buttloads of miles away?

The way they set that thing down on the surface blew my mind. Never mind all the really dumbass stuff humans do--Something like that makes me proud to call myself one of them...

Gary

The plants/pods and harvest looks great. Your puree is so rich in color I want to drink it (But I know better). Glad your back up and running with the electric situation. It sucks not having it. Makes you really appreciate being able to turn on a switch or get a cool drink. Get some OFF for those mosquitos.

Matt, My daughter loves loves loves dragon flies (the 21 yr old) She even has two dragon flies tattoos (That she got WITHOUT my knowledge or permission). That was a bad day for her when I saw them.........

Gary, I am working on a pm for you. As you can imagine I spend a lot of time following the missions every detail!

Jamie your making me blush now! My bag of tricks is deep. It's more like a magic closet according to friends.

Thanks very much guys!!!!
