chinense Carolina Reaper & The Reaper.

What's the difference between the two? I recently just found out that they're both slightly different.

Also I just recently purchased some Carolina Reaper seeds from Jim Duffy at Refiningfirechiles.com

and then stumbled upon this statement on pepperjoe's site claiming that all other seeds are frauds if they don't come from him or puckerbutt. WTH has happened here? http://www.pepperjoe.com/carolina-reaper.html

So I'm now left wondering if my seeds are gonna be no good because of these "circumstances" so to speak.

here's Duffy's site. http://store.myorganicseeds.com/Carolina-Reaper-10-Seeds-P3072704.aspx

Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper is trademarked (there is more than a few threads on here about this). The Reaper isn't.

There is only a few places to get the genuine Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper seeds. Anyone else selling them is growing their own plants and harvesting the seeds.

you can also get certified seeds from us and "carolina reaper" "reaper" "the reaper" and Smokin Ed's Carolina reaper are one in the same. If they dont say Smokin Ed's Carolina Reaper then they are not certified by Ed.

In my Opinion, saying any other seeds "are" Fake, is calling others lairs, I don't care for that. a lot of  Carolina Reaper seeds have been sold to a lot of Honest people so if any seed not from Ed or Joe is Fake, well what did the Honest people get.?  Anyhow If you want to spend $1. per seed get them from Ed IMO. if not get them from someone you trust.  Ed and no one else will pay for your time and money it takes to grow them out if they are not true pheno of the Carolina Reaper your are expecting. Calling them  Reaper and not Carolina Reaper for the most part is from what I understand Ed threatening to sue anyone that sales  "Carolina Reaper" Other then Him or Joe.

A member on here sent me a reaper pod. I can tell the seeds I got from it are 100% legit. People have grown the reaper already, so Joe's claim is either outdated or a lie. Try trading for some reaper seeds on here. I traded last year for some someone bought from Ed, but my plants didn't do well (their growth stalled for some reason and never took off).

I don't think he can sue anyone over Carolina Reaper. I think he just trademarked Smokin' Ed's Carolina reaper. That name is too long anyway!

Sooooo many seeds were sold last year, by Ed and Joe, that there are bound to be "Reapers" everywhere.
I have bought them---seeds and pods---, recieved them, ate them. planted them.
I don't, however, plan to make or market anything with the "Smokin Ed's" trademark.

I still have 1 plant from the original seed sale, so any seeds I may get from it ( a year or so=1 pod) are first gen from original retail seed.

Just don't buy Reaper seeds from Ebay. :shame:

Hm hopefully they turn out to be true. In all honesty I trust Jim Duffy's seeds more than just about anyone on the market. Guess thats just me though. I've only gotten seed from him.
Plus the seed Jim Duffy has, he's had for a little over two years now. Before this huge marketing thing happened.

Just sent the man himself an email requesting some info on his seed. I've never known the guy to be a fraud man. Care's waaay too much about his reputation. (Duffy)

pepperjoe is a snake oil salesmen.  Don't care if he reads this or not.  Avoid him and his seed if you can.Do a search here about him and if that's not enough, do a search on google about him and Penny renaming heirlooms just because and also using copyright images on their sites.  Hope I don't get any slack about this but you as a customer need to know.

The reaper, guessing you're referring to Bakers?  As far as I know they're the exact same thing you'd buy from Ed, minus the Carolina in the name.

Buym from Ed or the McDermott's.  I think they're very close partners when it comes to reapers.

There shouldn't be any difference in the two, but everything depends on the quality of the seeds that a person produces. Many of us got the original, or certified seeds from the source, at least as far as we know. For me, I got about 60 seeds and got less plants than I would have hoped for and when these plants produced pods, maybe 4 plants out of the bunch produced pods that looked like we were originally promised they would look like. Soon after people were producing pods, the sellers changed the description of their product saying the pods would be variable. What I did was separate these 4 plants from all the other pepper plants way back to the back part of the nursery and produced seeds, and then plants, that were more consistant than the seed batch that came from the source. For myself, I am calling these improved plants IR2. Even though they are still from reaper genetics, I will continue to improve each generation by only using the best plants for the next generation, so I will at some time have IR3, IR4, etc. I think all in all, it is a good pepper, but still needed work from the genetics that we were handed.
Their website is slightly correct just because you don't know if someone's seeds came from stock that was being grown close to other peppers and any source might not be pure. On the other hand, I'm sure there are quite a few people like me that have taken the precautions to make sure that their seed producing plants were kept pure. To know for sure, you would have to ask Jim if his plants were isolated enough to make pure seeds. I have bought quite a few starter plants from him and only a small fraction came up not true to form. The results I have had from his material has been WAY better than the Carolina Reaper seeds I got from Joe originally. I know I will buy more materials from Jim, I will never buy anything else from Joe. I had mentioned to him my poor germination and that was why I had to buy more seeds, but all I got were just what I paid for when the second batch of seeds came in.
Bottom line is, you DO need to buy from a trusted source, whoever that might be, but I'm sure there are some very good sources of reaper seeds out there, no matter what someone wants to call them.

Thanks for the input guys. So I got a reply back from Jim,#1 he told me that he's got permission to sell Carolina Reaper seeds from Ed so we can check that off. Yet there was some trouble with pod consistency. Either way he said he's only taking seed from the best pods so next years Reapers should be pretty consistent.

Not to mention in Jim's defense I highly doubt he would ever sell something he wasn't authorized to. They man is just too legit. I trust his morals and business ethics. Not to mention he always makes himself very readily available to his clients and fans, totally awesome guy.

So much mumbo over a pepper. Theres someone down im Australia selling these claiming they're from puckerbucket or whatever the name is. The trademark is on the name. You can sell the seeds just not allowed to use the name. Does not mean you can't say the seeds were harvested from pods grown from seed from ed.

Chinense aren't ban. Or if it was, it must have been lifted.

Current ban peppers are
C Chacoense
C Ciliatum
C Eximum
C Flexuosum
C Rhomboideum
C Schottianum.

Hey Mike, can you shed some light on PJ's claim about him having exclusive distribution rights? As I said in my post earlier, there are a few people selling "Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper". I assume Joe is just beating on his chest again, but I'm curious.
